Patrick Fairweather now has 2 dates for WKGN volunteers to come and help build the first of his new garden walls at his Learning Kitchen Garden at Beaulieu in Hampshire. This first wall is being made of heather bales, with a lime-based render; the next (to come later) will be of straw bales with a similar render, and finally there will be a cob wall as well.
We want to stress that this is very much a learning-by-doing exercise (hence you don't have to pay to come, and Fairweathers will provide sandwiches and coffee for lunch).
The work will be overseen by Colin Clarke, the wall project builder. Colin is a local sustainable buildings specialist, and the wall has been designed by him and David Hargreaves.
The heather bales are very heavy, so anyone who would like to learn about this sort of construction but lacks the strength to lift them is welcome, as long as they are willing to help with other, lighter gardening activities that same day.
Patrick has room for up to 12 workers. Work begins at 10.00 am and ends at 4.00 pm. The dates are Friday May 9th and Saturday May 17th.
