I’ve just started an MLitt with Prof. Charles McKean in the history department at the University of Dundee. My research topic concerns the walled kitchen gardens of country houses in the period 1650-1750, with particular reference to Scotland. As you will probably be aware, much of the physical evidence of the location and layout of these gardens and their relationship with the house itself and the household offices was swept away by the landscape movement. I wonder if anyone knows of any walled gardens which are still situated close to the big house anywhere in the UK, or any plans of gardens which have not survived? All contributions gratefully received – and acknowledged!
