I am currently a head gardener at a small estate in Kent and whilst doing some excavating in the walled kitchen garden i came across what i believe is an Mcphails Pit. Consists of an outer oblong shape wall with an inner wall, the gap between the two walls was filled with manure or wood chips, the inner wall has holes through it to let heat through, on top of this inner wall was a greenhouse structure and planks were used to cover the manure, if you follow me, i think it was patented in 1794, its more or less intact about 2ft under the surface, I would love to hear from anybody who knows if any still exist anywhere or have photos, it is a large structure, approx 5mx3m, this being the outer wall, oh and the walls would have been set beneath the ground with the glass struture above, thankyou. |
