Accounting vs. Finance?
Chris, I'm currently thinking about doing Accounting or Finance. I want to be a stock analyst. You mentioned in your e-mail that you're working as a stock analyst right now. What do you recommend me doing? |

I'm not the expert to speak on the subject but it seems as though majoring in finance (but taking a number of accounting) classes is the best way to go. I also recommend being well rounded because in security analysis, you have to know about a variety of topics. -Chris |

I am in college now and I am doing a Finance & Economics double major. I would not sugest a sole accounting degree for the posistion of stock anylsist. Now as a stock anylsist, you will need to know the fundamentals of accounting(of which a few accting. classes are required for a finance degree), you will probally want to focus more on the Finance aspect. If you have any questions , feel free to Instant message me on AIM, I included my name on here. |

Hey Jason, This is just my $0.02 worth, but here goes. If I were going to do it all over again, I'd become a CPA with a strong minor in Finance or get my CPA and then an MBA from a good school after that. Most analysts on Wall Street either have an MBA or an MBA along with a CFA designation. However, from my standpoint, I really think the training you get as a CPA is invaluable as a stock analyst. If I could even further focus it, I'd recommend that you look in the field of "forensic" accounting (as a CPA) and combine that with an MBA. I'm not sure how much the undergrad coursework would change, since I'm not an accountant by training, but there are some guys with that kind of background whose work I respect a great deal. Sounds like you have plenty of time to mull over these choices as you get ready for college. All the best, Tom |
