Message:   Hi all! This message board seems a bit quiet but because I couldn't find any other forum to ask about salsa in Curacao, I'll try this one

I'm planning a vacation to Curacao at the end of February 2007 - as I can't speak Spanish, I thought I'd better fly somewhere I can get along with English and German... I come from Tampere, Finland, and been dancing salsa for 1.5 years now and am also otherwise active (board member) in the local salsa association AzĂșcar (www.tampereensalsa.fi). I guess there are plenty of places where you can avoid salsa during your holiday but I don't want to ...

So my question goes: is it actually a good time to visit Curacao during/right after carnival (generally and as far as salsa is concerned)? I was planning to come on 23 February. I'd love to come to your parties and possibly even take salsa lessons. I mean, if you have classes during that time, I thought you might have some kind of a break during the carnival or after that. No idea about Puerto Rican style - Finns usually dance Cuban salsa, we have only one dance school teaching LA style here (the one I go to). Btw, we have four schools teaching Caribbean dances in our city so we really can call Tampere the salsa capital of Finland

Do you have regularly live salsa bands and concerts? You probably don't have any idea who's performing where and when in a couple of months but maybe you already know if a big name is performing in February/March.

My third question: I think all hotels in the city centre are far too expensive for somebody who's travelling alone so I need to get room a bit further away. That probably means I have to get a taxi back every night I go out but that shouldn't be a problem, I guess. I haven't checked where your parties take place - are they all in the centre of Willemstad? I got the impression that you don't hear much salsa at "regular" parties (more reggaeton, Latin pop, merengue?). Well, I'd definitely hear more Cuban/Caribbean music over there than at our "regular" parties (where "salsa" is often equal with Shakira...) In any case, I understood that even you need to organize salsa parties if you want dance salsa 'till you drop...

This is all very interesting - how salsa unites people everywhere... and how people dance in different corners of the world. I would love to read your answers!

Regards/Terveisin
