Atlantis
I have reason to believe, that the Native Americans of North America, are the descendants of the 'Atleanteans' of Plato's description. I would love to open this up as a topic for discussion, bearing in mind that this strictly based on supposition and theory, not intended as fact or to be offensive to any group. Looking forward to discussion. Sage |

After extensive study of plate tectonics, geography, oceanography, seismology, biology, and anthropology, it is possible that the 'lost island of atlantis' is now above water, in the region near the Great Lakes of the US along the Appalachian Mountain range. There are three divisions existing within the Appalachias. The geographical area from the Ohio Valley southward to Tennessee could have very well been an 'island'. Greek writers translated names of places and peoples into their own language, using descriptions that would be similar to the name in the other language. Cultural mythos and syncretism between cultures supports what Plato describes: that the island sank while the Ancient Athenians were on the island fighting the Ancient Atlanteans. If we use Plato's dates, this 'sinking of Atlantis' would've occurred around the same time of the mass extinctions in geologic record, which scientists are able to study due to the generous amount of evidence in the soils of Mammoth Caves, Kentucky USA. It is possible that there was a rapid warming of the climate, sea levels began to rise quickly, ice sheets relieved pressure on land mass, volcanism and earthquakes would have ensued, tectonic plate movement 'sped up', and continents changed shape. The key to this theory is the Nazca plate slamming under current North America, and the impact it would've had on North America, the Atlantic, coastal Africa, and coastal Europe. The Great Plains of the US would have been an ocean, the Gulf of Mexico would've been a sea, there would be no land mass connecting North and South America. South America would've been conjoined with the Nazca Plate, sort of hinged at the Andes, as a small continental piece of the larger Nazca Plate. Easter Island would've been, also, part of this larger land mass. The Eastern side, the Rain Forest side, of South America has developed after the 'shove' which has resulted in raising the land mass above sea level (study the flow of the Amazon). As the Nazca plate shifted and the ensuing havoc occured, a rebound effect could've occured in the climate: the rapid warming releasing gases into the atmosphere and the changing weight of the exististing ice sheets and tectonic plate shifts, actually creating another 'ice age' on the planet. |

"Turtle Island" Cultural mythos describes the Americas as Turtle Island. The turtle in N. American mythos syncretises with the Greek ideal of 'Atlas'...a pillar which holds...a pole, a sort of axis mundi which supports the earth. I'm not trying to confuse the mythos of Atlas with Atlantis, but the king of the Atlanteans, is Atlas...the pillar. |
