What the future holds? If only we knew eh? There would be no need for that desperate wait on lottery night as we would know that winning was a dead cert. As for the bus/coach industry I think future is possibly bleak. The reason I say this is I have been in this industry now for the best part of 22yrs and I have seen companies come and go and and shadey operators come and go and companies where the entire contents of the fitters shed is a roll of gaffer tape and a 4lb hammer! The problem is that more and more companies have decided that their profit margine is more important than the safety and comfort of their passengers. I realise that everyone is in business to make money but the more and more these companies come away from a service and make it more of a get rich quick campaign the more and more the future of the industry looks bleak. You then have the companies that wrap their vehicles up in cotton wool, even to the point of moving their flag ship vehicles into the pit area of the depot out of the rain! I kid you not!! But in a lot of cases this is at the expense of facilities for the driving staff and indeed a decent living wage. For some of us that have ascended to the lofty heights of supervision or management there are too few of us that have the attiude that without the drivers we have no service, we have no duties covered and we earn no profit and indeed we have no job! It is a constant annoyance to me that at least 75% of a garages driving staff could do a far better supervision or management job than some of the people these comapanies see fit to employ. I have seen catering managers and cleaning managers take up operational roles within the public service vehicle sector. I have the attitude that if I wouldn't do it myself why on earth would I expect someone else to do it. There are a lot good drivers both male and female that I have had the privilage to work with over the years and I am sure that there will be a lot more before I decide to retire and give everyone that knows me the peace and quiet they deserve(If you know me you will know what I mean) I think we may have a chance of survival as an industry providing the owners and operators of the companies we work for do not forget their roots and where their profit is earnt. All The best Pete Smith |

How do we think its going !!! Coaches now go slower than they did 10 years ago, and im not just taking about them being limited to 65 instead of 70. Banning us from the outside lane of the motorways means we now have to sit at 55 behind a line of HGV's Trains too expensive, coaches getting slower. T5 just built and expansion planned at stansted what way do the think the government are going Rant over Regards Fatboy |
