Everyone must be happy with their wages!! That's a first. Perhaps I should write to Route One and say, "Out of 205 members, not one is unhappy with their wages!" Or are you worried about who might read this? Come on guys and gals, let us know....! |

I've been driving off and on since 1993 also (started with Leaside in London), and I have worked in varied companies. With Bus drivers there are two schools of people, those that want to be there and those that don't. That said the wages are too low. I can imagine it is difficult to live anywhere or bring up a family on a bus drivers wage. I just do part time, as I can earn more money in sales, ironically, I don't like sales, which brings me back to the commment I started with. I do think that the big private companies have been asset stripping, and driving out costs since 1984, but they would do, that's their business. Bus passenger services should be re-regulated immediately. Also a re-assesment of wages compared to level of risk and responsibility involved. Drivers that enjoy the job, do what you can about the wages, and keep smiling, those that don't like it have the starkest of choices I'm affraid. |

Being a current London busman, I'd reccomend anyone who has a PCV and the ability to do so to move down here ASAP, £7.50ph is a disgrace as far as I am concerned. As for Bendy drivers, I earn over £10 and hour on normal rate and the Bendies are on a fair bit more than that! Speaking of wage rates, do most of you work for a flat rate, or like us do you get enhancements for unsocial hours, weekends, nights, involuntary O/T etc? Steve |

As a HGV driver I am based in the North East and curently earn £6.60 p.h. , for the first 8 hrs...then time and a half after that. Sat is time and half. Sun double time. £3 per day ( tax free ) for meal allowance. £20 , tax free night out allowance. But I dont do nights out. Trevor |

Lets face it, the whole induastry needs a shake up, whether your a bus or coach driver, the wages are shocking for the responsibility you have sooner or later the "penny" will drop and the government will realise the plight the industry's in and instead of Vosa chasing the driver who is trying to earn a crust, they will regulate the pricing system and ensure that a fair price is charged across the line for private hire, the knock on effect being more drivers, and operators being able to pick and choose who they want to drive their vehicles, instead of being forced into a situation whereby you have to employ that person because there is no one else to employ. |

Hi Further to this post and specifically in answer to Trevor's query on detailed breakdown of earnings, I am a full-time coach driver and my wages are made up of the follwing: I get a fixed basic salary of £21000pa Overtime is on top of that at £9ph standard or at £10ph on restdays, late nights & early mornings. Bank holidays are all paid as a fixed 9 hours if you're not working or at 9 hours plus whatever hours you work at £10ph on top of that. Don't get a meal allowance but regularly eat at motorway services for 1p a shot (Welcome Break & Roadchef allow this with or without passenegers). Also, groups of passenegers will often invite me to join them if they have a meal booked somewhere. £20 night out allowance. But this is taxable. Last year my total earnings were just short of £29000 before tax, NI, etc. On average I take home £1600-1700 each month. Prior to driving coaches I worked in IT administering a network and fixing and installing computers for a blue chip PLC in London. My salary there was £30000pa..... Cheers Rog |

I am a fairly new driver of 1½ years experience. I work part time for a couple of small operators doing mainly rail replacement work. The rate is £10ph with a minimum of 10 hours pay for a rail shift. Fair enough I thought but recently I have been involved in discussions with a few other drivers and they are telling me that has been the standard with lots of small operators for at least 5 years and quite possibly a lot longer. If that is the case then perhaps it is time for a change. Colin |

Colin In 2005 I was driving rail replacement and earning over 11 pounds an hour. If I worked before 6am I got 12, if I worked after 10pm I got 12.50. LUL pay the best rates to bus companies so maybe in London I was on a better deal. However, one thing I would bear in mind is experience. Some companies will take you on but pay a lower rate until you have proved your worth. It may be worth speaking to your union rep. If you don't have one, have a look on the TGWU page, but I don't hold out much hope. I think it's time for a 'Bus Drivers Union'. Transport and general workers is a bit of a bloody insult if you ask me considering we drive people around for living. Being in the same union as catering staff...is that just me? I have no issue with the Heathrow staff and they were right to strike but please, that's like coppers being in the TGWU. Mind you, judging by the fact that loads of coppers are about to march for more money maybe they could use a new union. TGWU are all we have, for the moment so it's put up and shut up. Another example of 'devil and deep blue sea' at work. |
