Why has PCV driving become such a poor job?

To be honest I hate PCV driving and have done for a long time, I know I'm not alone on feeling like this. I've had my licence since March '90 and it wasn't good then and its only got worse for me. I'd love to know how other drivers feel about it and what can be done to improve things.

Happy new year everyone!!!

Re: Why has PCV driving become such a poor job?

Hey Chris,

You and me both mate. I passed in 93. There are a number of factors that have upset the apple cart. Roads are filling up with more and more twits who, for want of a better expression, get their licenses out of cornflake packs, and that's just the lorry drivers. The industry itself treats drivers badly, and when I see LUL and Bob Crow crowing all over the place about their 'poor' conditions, I want to slap him. I don't think people realise how hard our job is, and who is it that saves the day when the trains go on strike? Who was it back in London before teatime on July 7th taking all the nervous people home?
Bus drivers have always been under rated, abused and thought of as nothing more than glorified delivery drivers but I can sense an air of change. I am up for a revolution!

The job of driving the bus I love. 11 tonnes of fibre glass and engine plodding along at 30, holding up everyone, I love it, it was opening the doors and picking up people that I lost interest in. Higher wages? Better management? Cleaner buses? A more understanding and tolerant public? We're living in a dream me thinks, but while we have a voice, let's use it.

One major improvement would be getting shot of the drivers who do it for money, rather than the vocational status. Bums on seats don't make good professional drivers and the more of those I encounter the more angry I get. Maybe we should stand outside Number Ten with a sign that says, "Who's going to pick you up tonight?" when every single psv/pcv holder in the uk sticks two fingers up and says, "Sod it! I've had enough!" The only way to change something is to jolt it into view.

Try smiling hun, it is hard, impossible sometimes. I can still see myself, head in hands on the stand wondering what the hell I was doing. Maybe it's time for a change babe, new career? Or maybe we're just looking for our freedom fighter? Any offers?

All the best babe, keep coming back

Re: Why has PCV driving become such a poor job?

It ain't the job, maybe poorly paid, maybe ridiculous starting/end times for your shift, I love all that, granted a little bit more money won't go a miss. What really gets up my goat, is those so called customers we have to pick up. If everything goes OK, then they leave, do their shopping, or whatever, and come back for a return journey. BUT, if your'e a little late, or maybe don't feel like having a long winded chat, then a complaint here it comes. your driver was late, etc. Stupid, maybe, but as a driver, who do I complain to about the obnoxious, intolerable, half wit, who believes that the bus is only there for them, at a time and place they want to catch it?

Thankfully, they are in the minority, but if I didn't like the job, for the money I get paid, I would be better off stacking shelves somewhere.
