Our sympathy and thoughts are with the families of the passengers at this time. National Express have released a statement and it can be viewed here http://www.nationalexpress.com/utilities/press16_1745_04072007.cfm

NATIONAL EXPRESS CRASHn Sent in by JD

JD Said, "I see that Trathens have withdrawn their Neoplan Skyline deckers amid safety fears following the coach accident on Wednesday night. The comments raised by Trathens drivers about these vehicles swaying on the motorways could be down to driving on the inside lane. With the poor state of British motorways it is inevitable that they will sway. I drive a Scania Irizar Century on the M4 regularly especially between Membury and Newbury I tend to drive in the middle lane because of this 'lean'. With regards to training on these vehicles Trathens were one of the first UK operators to use Neoplan Skyliners when they formatted the rapide service from Plymouth to London which was adopted by the National bus company before deregulation. We have to look to the Driving Standards Agency for changes within the training requirements. Very few operators train drivers using double deckers, most use old single Decker service buses (PSV Drivers says - Agreed! You cannot expect a driver to fair well on a decker when trained on a bread van Arriva Southend do this, PSV license or not).

My heart felt sympathy goes out to the family's involved and hope someone is offering help to the driver as it looks like the press are laying the blame with him without all the facts.
