Ernest John swanborough (1880-1916)

Hi

Have been tracking down some of the people on this site and came across an entry on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site that stated Ernest was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. Checking Ancestry.co.uk I was able to find that this was given on 14/01/1916 although there are no details as to why he was given this. Further research in the archives will be required to find out more - just thought you might like to know if you were not already aware of this. The DCM is seen as "a near miss" for the Victoria Cross!

regards

Re: Ernest John swanborough (1880-1916)

I have now found out that this award was mentioned in the London Gazette Supplements - on 14/01/1916 he was mentioned as being awarded the DCM and on 11/03/1916 it gives a detailed mention

"9769 Private E J Swanborough, 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a surprise night attack by the enemy. He did fine work in rallying men who were retiring by his calm and brave example. On another occasion he volunteered and successfully carried back a message over some three hundred yards of open ground, and at once returned to his company."

Thanks for this information Briony. Sounds like he deserved the DCM.
