1. ray samaniego--bel air
2. omar quintana--riverside

these are the two best playmakers i have seen in el paso. quintana was a great athlete, who had he been taller and more disciplined in the classroom might have been college material. others like ramson--andress and stansbury--irvin got alot more publicity, but neither of those two had more wins than ray or omar. these guys were great. duarte at franklin and mike stephenson also at riverside were very good. stephenson was every bit as effective as duarte, i don't understand why he did not play college ball somewhere.

From the good old days according to my father... John Malone '67, then David Malone '69 (his brother) then Craig Graf '71. All Mighty T-Birds when the T-Birds were truly mighty. Late 60's - mid-70's. Jack Quarles the coach. Shible Simon '71 (Austin) went on to play at Rice.
More modern times. Joey Frias (Franklin) (his dad and mine were teammates at Coronado), Alex Torres (Franklin) for sure. Omar Duarte (Franklin) (he beat Midland Lee when they had Cedric Benson). Mighty Montwood Ram Gabe Flores. Ed Stansbury (Irvin). Jamar Ransom (Andress). Chris Day (Chapin). Mike Perez (San Eli).

My pop was playing football in Colorado after Craigo's stint at UTEP. Says Craigo was one of many good HS QB's in EP and an excellent QB on a hapless Miner team. McKinley (BA '71) was a HS rival of my dad's and led the miners to a huge upset win over ASU at Sun Devil stadium '74. He also avenged an 82-3 drubbing by Utah ('73) by beating them the next year ('74) at the Sun Bowl.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

Franklin did not beat Midland Lee when Cedric Benson played there. Lee lost two games while Benson was the starting running back, to Odessa High and a drubbing at hands of West Monroe (La.) his senior year. They still did win the state title that year.

Franklin did lose to Lee 34-20 in the area playoffs the '99 season, Benson's junior year, when Lee was the #1 team in the country according to USA Today. Franklin had a great team that year, and played Lee closer than anyone else did in the playoffs. But...Franklin did not beat Lee while Benson played there.

My dad heard that the Lee coaches were so upset that they cancelled their after game dinner at The Cattleman's Steak House and fed the team McDonald's on that long ride back to Midland. But I am SURE that an Omar Duarte led Franklin team beat Midland Lee one year.

Jul 7, 2007 - 12:47AM
Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

Actually Chavez had almost all the same receivers as Foran did, just a younger group. Tucker, Crichlow (the two outside receivers) were both starters as Jrs (Cliff started as a sophomore). Only the slot receivers were changed and Chavez had the likes of one of the Costanzo brothers (Mark) to work with, but only for half of the season. Mike Torrez also had some slot receiver experience as a Jr.

I guess you could say experience had a factor but not by much. Marco Bueno really stepped up this past year as a slot receiver as did other occasional slot receivers like Jon Day, D. Moore, etc.

Scott Grantham is one of the best quarterbacks I've seen. I would pick him over Alex Torres any day. If you ever saw grantham, you'd get the most versatile quarterback, he could run (yes he could) he could throw long, he could throw a bullet, he was quick, tall and pretty smart. The only problem was that he would choke in big games, but other than that i consider him one of the best.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

1. a qb CANNOT choke in "big" games and be considered one of the best ever. a great qb is supposed to be at his best when everything is on the line. that is why terry bradshaw is considered a great qb.

2. bustamante at riverside was a good qb. he could have been a great qb, but he played that positon only one year. the year before he shattered his ankle and did not play at all his junior year. he was tall, strong, smart and athletic enough to get a baseball scholarship. he could have been one of the best ever if not for his injury. he still did **** good.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

Scott never choked in any big games. If you are referring to the Montwood game his senior year, our line is who choked big time. He had no time to throw and still didn't have any turnovers. Franklin's biggest game of the year in 2004 was against Midland and he passed for 452 yards. So he never choked in big games.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

I have nothing against Scott. As i have stated, I believe he's the best quarterback I've seen in El Paso. But how can you say the line "choked"? Veliz was smart for bringing the blitz. Grijalva should've put two backs next to Scott when they would do shotgun. If Grantham saw guys coming towards him, then he should've gone to the side or found their weakness. Something.

Then in the midland game, of course he choked. Choking means when you have the game in your hands, but then you literally give it to them. You can throw for 1000000 yards, then run for another 400 yards, only to blow it all in the end. That's what he did.

How did Scott blow the Midland game in the end? Our coach called a freaking pass play to our TE whom we threw about 3 passes to all year- AND- it was a drag across the middle that wouldn't have even gotten us the yardage we needed-AND- our kicker missed an extra point that could've made it 31-34 and we would have been able to kick a FG to tie it instead of calling such a dumb play. You are absolutely right about Veliz being the smarter coach, I totally agree that we should've put two backs in.

Getting back to Grantham and the Montwood game - all Franklin needed to do was a freakin' screen pass. the way Montwood was coming they could not have stopped a screen. Poor coaching but thats nothing new coming from me.

The Midland game is another story - as Matt said the play called at the end was a pass to the TE - stupid play - the way Alex Torres made two circus catches on the final drive if I was Grantham i would have said - no matter what play was called - Alex this is coming to you go get it.

I agree 100%. Most great athletes excel at more than 1 sport, hint Stansbury. Alot of pro football players had baseball or basketball careers if they desired much like Deion and Bo Jackson. How about having Lebron as an outside rush end? Or Shaq daddy as a tight end? Randy Moss and a shooting forward?

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

Youre right coach those guys are only the best qbs of the past 2 years. Edmund Stansbury was by FAR the best QB ever out of EP. #1 ranked QB in the entire nation by sporting news. No one else for this town has ever had that at any position. The guy was 6'3, 230 and won state twice in the discus. As a soph. and senior. What an athlete. He got too big to play qb in college and he was behind Cade McNown at UCLA so they moved him to FB and he started there. Riverside has always had good qbs that put up big stats with their little screen passes but no where near Stansbury. He would blow these guys today out of the water. A man amongst boys.

Exactly MS. There have been some good quarterbacks in the past 5 years but they are not even close to being as talented as the quarterbacks of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

1 Edmund Stansbury-Irvin (Was recognized throughout as one of the Best QB's in the Nation)
2 Andy Tellez-Ysleta (Only El Paso QB to have beaten Odessa Permian)
3 Mike Herrera-Riverside
4 Jamar Ransom-Andress
5 Alex Torres-Franklin (This QB only played QB one season and helped get his team to Texas Stadium.)
6 Gabe Herrera-Riverside
7 Omar Duarte-Franklin

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

HUSKY12 I believe statistics do matter but not too much. When you have a quarterback that passes for 500 yards in a game with 35 out of 60 attempts and 4 intercpetions and won the game. Media will talk about the 500 yards passing game and not mention the countless attempts and interceptions.

Statistics are deceiving

A quarterback throws a short 5 yard screen pass and the running back takes it 80 yards to paydirt. Should those 80 yards passing really be credited to the quarterback???

all good but i wasn't referring to a foran vs dv or anything like that, my main point was to remind of the age group of the bulk of posters here, should have stated that first. i fully concur that stat's are deceiving but with all of the discussion of d1 prospects etc... they must be addressed as that is part of the recruiting deal.......

The kid passed for over 9,000 yds and had 85 td's in his career and was All-State 3 yrs in a row and even though they were 3A for a year then moved up to 4A, they beat up on some 5A teams! Teams win games, not just the QB. He was good, but Riverside had really good players at just about every position on the field. There Herreras and Quintana put up big numbers with a whole lot less around them. They had good players on their teams, but the years you speak of were the most talented at Riverside... solid all around.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

Hand down with nobody even close to him is Edmund Stansbury. I don't care what anybody has to say, he is the only QB to be a 1st Team All American from El Paso. yeah sure there have been some very good quarterbacks to come out of el paso, but none like Stansbury. I know D.J. Check from Clint has all these records and this and that, and I can't take anything away from the guy, but when you have a receiver like Jeremy Arnold, and you play against a bunch of high schools that couldn't beat the best middle school team in el paso, you better be able to put up some numbers.

1. Edmund Stansbury (Irvin)
2. Marvin Switzer (Andress)
3. Omar Duarte (Franklin)
4. Jamar Ransom (Andress)
5. Rufus Brown (Austin)
6. Tony Turrey (Irvin)
7. Rudy Contreras (Del Valle)

I've also seen a lot of people put Chris Day on here, are you kidding me, he wasn't even the best QB in his district when he was playing, Brian Stewart from Irvin was a much better QB than Chris Day, if fact I haven't seen one QB from Chapin that has impressed me, it's real easy to put up big numbers when you have the best athletes in the city and you throw the ball 30-40 times a game. And this year the best QB in the city is easily Carlos Maese from Ysleta. Sure the kid doesn't put up big numbers but I have seen a few of their games and he manages the game better than any other QB in the city. He can make any and every throw, and he does not make mistakes, if I read the statistics correctly I believe he is the only starting QB in the city who has not thrown an interception this season. I don't know about you but any quarterback who has gone through half of the season with no INT's, and his team is winning sounds like a great QB to me.

For your information the litle 3A school D.J. Check played at beat up on these 4A and 5A schools. DJ Check had his best games against these schools not to mention he only played half of the games against the smaller schools. Like I previously said put him behind a Montwood O-Line and they would have won state not just District then lose the next round like every other big school in El Paso. D.J. Check is also the only other QB to receive All-America Honors and did so as a sophmore.

Go back and check his stats the kid made throws and plays he did not rely on one person (Jeremy Arnold) Every year he had 4 or more receivers with over 30 receptions each. The kid could spread the ball around. We are talking about what the QB did as an individaul, not what his team did, nor what they did after high school, lets talk about what they did while they were in high school!!

Check win state with a Montwood O-line you have to be kidding me. I've seen both Stansbury and Check play, and yes I give Check credit he was a great QB, but he had nothing that Stansbury had. He was nowhere near the caliber of player that Stansbury was, and if Check made All-American as a sophmore you must be crazy. What all american list puts sophmores on their list? It's hard enough for juniors who are first team all state guys to win that honor, and you think I'm gonna believe that Check made it as a sophmore you must be out of your mind. I like Check a lot, and I know him real well, but he is not the best quarterback this city has had...and not to put down Check, but All-Americans get D-1 Scholarships, the don't go play receiver at Sul Ross.

Players move positions all the time in college. Lorne Sam at UTEP was a highly toutly QB and moved to WR in college. Anquan Boldin another QB who moved to WR. Allen Iverson was a sick QB in HS too and he chose bball. Eric Winston was a #1 TE in nation at midland lee and Texas moved him to tackle. UCLA had Cade McNown at QB he was a Heisman prospect in college. They needed to get Stansbury on the field so they moved him to FB.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

I would agree with a lot of the players everyone has mentioned on here. Ed Stansbury was probably the best QB El Paso ever had. I also agree having played against Rufus Brown, he was definitely the best option QB El Paso had. That is why he was a starter at Florida State as a CB because of that blazing fast speed. Silas Garcia from my old school was also a great QB that may have led Eastwood to a victory against Odessa Permian if he hadn't broken his collar bone in the game. I'm not really a big fan of DJ Check though. I played with him in the All Star game in 2000 and was expecting more from a guy with so many records. Still a good QB, just not worthy of a top 10 great in my opinion. I think Nick Jackson out of Coronado was actually a more efficient QB than Check was. Plus Jackson could run adding another dimension to his game. Just my opinion though.

Don't forget about a QB who is 17 and 6 as a starter, has accounted for 2700+ yards and 32 TD's in his career, has a District & Bi-District title under his belt, and still has 1 year of eligibility remaining. That would qualify #20 for Top 10 in any discussion.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

I played varsity for three years in 5A from 99-01. From my perspective, here is my list..

1. Ed Stansbury. Anybody who says otherwise doesn't know EP football or just never saw the guy play. He was bigger, stronger, and faster then everybody on the field. The guy won the state title in shot put. He had ridiculous arm strength. He played 4 years for UCLA (at fullback) but how many EP players can say they played 4 years for UCLA?
2.Jamar Ransom, Andress. The guy played 4 years at Oklahoma State (as a safety). He was the strongest guy on the field in every game he played in El Paso. Rufus Brown was a more dangerous runner, but Ransom was a more complete QB. His WR played for SMU, Rushbrook, that was a good team.
3. Omar Duarte, Franklin. To be fair, his team was ridiculously good, but he was their catalyst. He could throw when he had to, never made mistakes, and was cool under pressure. If I'm not mistaken, and I could be that Franklin team in 2000 didn't allow a single team to score on them the entire season in 5A.
4. Quintana from Riverside, A classic case of a great athlete who couldn't be beat. The guy just willed Riverside to victories. He didn't have the athleticism or size to play college ball, but was a great HS player.
5. Rufus Brown, Austin. Best running QB in El Paso history. Ran 4.4, won a National Title at FSU. Played with the Skins and is now in the AFL with the Arizona Rattlers. He had a strong arm, but struggled with accuracy.
6. DJ Check: Great passer. If he had a receiver over 5 foot 6 and on offensive line the guy could have broken records. Not great arm strength, but great accuracy and mobility.
7. Contreras from Del Valle: He was really small, but elusive, he had a good WR too. Contreras lead some great Del Valle teams that dominated EP for two years (before Veliz left).

Of the modern guys, Reza from Montwood and Day from Chapin are up there. The kid at Austin is really good too, can't remember his name.

Ray Samaniego from Bel Air was undefeated as a starter in the regular season (20-0) and led his team to two consecutive bi-district titles. He was all-city first team both years and player of the year in El Paso his senior year, rushing for almost 1000 yards and passing well over 1000 yards. Something like 19 TDs on the ground and 17 thru the air.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

You guys are rediculous, how could you put Quintana or Duarte ahead of Stansbury? Those two are not even in the same league as Stansbury. Yes there are great in their own right, but nowhere near the level that Stansbury played at. Sure their numbers may be higher than Stansbury's, but if you know anything about those Irvin teams there were games where Stansbury only threw the ball 10 times a game. Stansbury's junior and senior years at Irvin they also had the cities leading rusher in Jason Flores. Stansbury's junior year Flores was the city MVP and then Stansbury got the city MVP his senior year. None of the 5A schools now could even get close to competing with the teams that Irvin had in those days, name another school that had 2 players in the same year go off and play Legit D-1 football, other than Stansbury at UCLA and his teammate Terry Nichols who went to play at Texas A&M. Not to mention that Stansbury is the only All-American to come out of El Paso, played in the Schutt Sports All-American game where he scored a Touchdown. The El Paso High School All-Star Game is a joke, name another player that has gone off to play in a real All-Star game (yeah I know Andre Jones)......you can't do it. Edmund Stansbury is by far the best QB to ever play high school football in El Paso, and I don't see another QB matching his accomplishments anytime soon.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

It was nice to have read your opinion on Stansbury but the fact still remains, he did not lead Irvin past the 3rd round of the playoffs. Stansbury definitely had the talent but did not have the talent enough to lead Irvin past the 3rd round of the playoffs. Facts are facts.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

Once again Carlos what team now could be one of those Irvin teams...none of em' can. Who can compete with them, Montwood, Chapin, Coronado, Franklin, yeah I don't think so. So just because he didn't lead his team to the 3rd round he's not the best, the team they lost to that year was one of the best, they lost to Abilene Cooper in the Area round of the playoffs, and that team was lead by Dominique Rhodes and that team went to play in the Championship game. So at least the team that they lost to was a championship team.

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

football guru and Texas born and raised you guys are going by players who were talented and went on to play Legit D-1 football. That is another topic in itself. Maybe call the topic "Which EP players signed with a D-1 University." I see this topic as the top 10 quarterbacks ever, not the top 10 quarterbacks who went on to a D-1 school. This topic is more like the top 10 quarterbacks who lead their team to consecutive district titles and atleast help his team pass the 1st round of the playoffs atleast once. The proof is in the championship trophies.
Texas Born Texas Raised

Re: top ten quarterbacks ever

You know u guys are right, it's all about the trophies and things like that right...then name another QB who made All-American? You know why you can't, because there is no other QB to play in el paso that did that, and that is why Stansbury is the best QB to play in el paso, PERIOD. Im sorry but beging 1st team all city doesn't mean crap, now once your name is on the 1st Team All-State and All-American list, then you can compare, but nobody has those two accomplishments so there is no discussion.

i am telling you Riverside beat irvin in the playoffs when stansbury was the qb! i was there! it was at irvin! the glover brothers were on that team as well, at least one of them was. irvin was good, real good--just so happens the rangers were better. quintana may have gone undefeated his entire high school career (excluding the playoffs.) i can tell you this much---javi's two problems were: he hated school work and he was too short. had he been over 6 foot tall he would have been the best to ever play in ep. the guy was phenominal. you gotta remember that alot of politics goes into who gets picked all-america or all state, even all city. i am not saying stansbury did not deserve it in his jr or senior years, but shaw was well respected and well liked by all his fellow coaches. that helped.

stealth your right, riverside did beat Irvin, actually they beat Irvin twice, but that was when Stansbury was a Freshman in the sun bowl, and then as a soph. at Irvin. Once he got to his junior and senior years they were one of the most dominating teams we've had in this city.
