very true jmendoza, but the era he's posting about are the 70's and 80's. work and walker are alot younger. they were probably playing high school football in the mid and late 70's. now if you start with 1995 and up, then work, walker, veliz and grijalva dominate. had work continued to coach he would have easily passed sepkowitz and brooks as the winningest coach in ep history. it would have taken him half as many years to do it.

Re: THOSE WERE COACH'ES !
Jim Davenport was the best at getting the most out of his players. He was Head Coach at Parkland late 70's thru mid 80's. He beat teams he had no business beating with about 25 players on his squads. This was back when Parkland competed in the top division . . . not 4-A like now. All of his wins were against much bigger schools. Parklands enrollment back then was about 900 students and Davenport would whip Ysleta who had over 3,000 students.
The measure of a great coach is what he can do with a limited student population with players of limited ability. Davenport was a wizard at fundamentals and motivation. His players would run through a wall for him. He kept his standards high and coached and nurtured his players with great dignity.
By far the best football coach ever in El Paso. If he had been at Coronado or any other talent laden school he would have won a state championship.

Re: THOSE WERE COACH'ES !
back then there was no overtime. a game ended at regulation even if it was a tie. any time your team reached inside the 20 yard line of your opponent, that was considered a penetration. regardless if your team scored or not it count as a penetration. so if the score ended tie at 14, if your team reached inside the 20 yard line of your opponent 5 times but only scored twice, you could win the game, if your opponent reached your 20 less than 5 times.
davenport and alex saucedo wasted alot of talent at riverside. they could never win there. riverside was a large school. the riverside community then was like the eastside is today. davenport and saucedo could not and did not develop that talent. it took lou james to get the ball rolling and then tom work to steamroll.

Alot of the coaches your naming like Saucedo and Davenport ended up in Clint. Saucedo was the AD in Clint in the early to mid 90s right before Pat O'Neil became AD there. I believe he has since passed away. Davenport taught and coached in Clint but spent his last 6 or 7 years there teaching only. Another old school football coach from back in the day was Sonny Pitts if I remember correctly he coached at Ysleta for a while. He also went to Clint and ended up winning 3 state championships in cross country of all things.

Don't know if you all remember, but back in 84-85 season the assistant coach for Jefferson was Richard Lowenberg. He wanted the head coach position but unfortunately did not get it. That was the bad news for Jefferson because Jefferson finished 3rd in the district that year, this was back when Jefferson was 1-5A. In the year that followed 85-86 season Richard Lowenberg took the head coach position at Austin High School and in turn gave Austin a District championship. Brooks and past coaches at Coronado had the whole west side for years and years and they squandered the talent they had. They went to the playoffs many years but it was because of pure depth and talent.ALAN SEPTKOWITZ-ANDRESS was another that had pure talent and could not control his players, but won a bunch of ball games

I believe Tony Shaw from Irvin by far is the best coach El Paso has had. There have been a lot of good one's, but I believe he stands above the rest. All of the things that he did for his players, as well as players from other schools is just unheard of now. When there were top players in the city and their coaches weren't doing anything to help them out, they would go and talk to Coach Shaw, and he would help them find somewhere to play. To me that is what a great coach is made of, stopping at nothing to see good players go off and play, not stay around here and waste their talents. Name one other coach who has done things like this.....I don't think you can.
