Many of you are misunderstanding the question.

Who are the Top 3 GREATEST runningbacks El Paso has ever seen.

Waldo Rodriguez is not.
Blake Juarez Downer is not.
Josh Flores is not.(depends on this year)

You have to go with players who were unstoppable their sophomore, junior, senior year and how many District titles did he help his team win in those 3 years.

Waldo, Blake are nowhere close to being in that category. Josh is almost there but everyone knows his coach will screw it all up. I guess we can scratch him out as well.

Eddie Britton, Andre Session and Ray Mickens. If the question was for 4 greatest then I would include Tony Gonzales.

running back late early 90's out at Irvin by the name of Calem Quin comes to mind, Toraino Singleton would have been a great ball player for years was drafted by Tampa Bay but could not avoid legal troubles, but he is finally out of prison and living the straight life out in Californa, and Sessions back in the day at Jefferson was a man amongst boys heard a story one time were an opposing coach soaked his field for 2 days hoping come gametime that would slow him down.

Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

Caleb Quinn? You really are smoking something. Come on fellas, he was a good running back, but one of the best? Not even close? As I stated in my previous post, he transfered from CHS because he was going to split time with Nalley. How can he be considered one of the best when he wasn't going to even start at Coronado?

If you consider Caleb then Jody Nalley has to be added. He rushed for something like 3,400 yards in two years, and his fullback rushed for over 1,000 yards his senior year.
Does anyone wonder why EP football is a joke? Its people like these guys considering Quinn a great RB.

Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

its not a matter of who led the state in rushing. If your offense ran the ball 75 times a game then I would expect you to lead the state in rushing. Teams in EP did not really throw the rock back then (except Riverside), thus giving the opportunity for RB's to rack up huge numbers. It amazing that D-coordinators didnt put 9 men in the box to make the offenses throw the ball.

I remember watching Toranio Singelton and Ray Mickens playing against each other. Both had different styles but it was awesome to watch. Andress won the game, but in the 1st qtr,Coronado's offense hadn't gone on the field yet because Singelton would run back every kickoff return for touchdown. the score was 14-14 in at the end of the 1st qtr. If you guys watched hs footbal growing up,you'd remember those guys.

the best running back ive seen in ep was by far jerald turner. i would take him over eddie britton every day of the week. britton was a great running back im not taking that away from him but anybody that runs a 4.5 in el paso can be a great running back. the only thing bad about britton was that he went down easily, he wasnt really a tackle breaking running back. on the other hand jerald was about just as fast as britton, but it also took more than one person to tackle him. he could stiff arm people, run over people, or just simply out run people....whatever was easiest for him.

Panther Pride why do you bring up running backs that took the wrong turn. It makes no sense. You are going by pure speculation or optimism thinking that if they would have continued playing that they would have been considered great running backs.

You can't go by would of and could of. You have to go by facts and records. Running backs that helped their team win District Championships and Area Championships. Running backs that helped their teams go undefeated in the regular season.

Would of, Could of???

its as simple as this for everybody.... you cannot compare waldo, flores, gonzalez, sanchez, britton, etc, etc. To players like Toraino Singleton, until two week ago, no running back at UTEP had run for over 200 yards since he graduated and that was 12 years ago, he was totally dominant in highschool, college(its crazy that he ended up at utep but he didnt have the grades) and he was looking to be a solid starting running back in the nfl with the bucs and yeah then he messed up and got locked up, but greatest running back in el paso? Toraino Singleon Coronado High School, a no brainer

With my own eyes the best running back I have ever seen is Jerald Turner from Andress. His first game on varsity against Irvin he had 2 carries for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was a back-up and rushed maybe 6-9 times a game and still broke 1000 yards. Its a shame he couldn't stay out of trouble though...

el aguila,

Stewart is in prison, serving 60yrs. This was another one of El Paso's kids who got caught up. Do you guys know how many of these kids would have made it if they had their heads on right. Stewarts only competetition in the whole country was Barry Sanders, and the funny thing was that they were both the same height but Stewart had the over all build upper and lower body. He was swift like a gazelle and had the power of a horse, This Guy had offers from every Major School out there and turned them down.Imagine for a moment if this guy would have made. Would he be the all time NFL rushing leader. How is it that I guy has not one but 2 99 yarders in one game the only HS player in the country at that time to do so and he can't get out of the El Paso. I tell you its a curse El Paso has probly had more superstars that never made it then any city in this country. IT'S A CURSE I TELL YOU A CURSE!!!!!!
The_RealTruth

Oct 11, 2007 - 1:45PM
Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

DBLOCK I totally agree with you with this CURSE.

It's up to the people of this city to break the curse that has been plaguing high school football for over 60 years. Many so called knowitalls can say that it's the pressures of being a teenager, that's bull. The fact is that it's the mentality of most El Pasoans. I mean come on you don't have to look that far back to see the infamous CURSE at work.

2004 Montwood RB Edward Britton committed to Texas Tech then weeks laters gets caught shoplifting or something.

2004 Riverside Shawn Jordan committed to LSU not really sure but I think it was a year later gets caught at the border with steroids or something.

2005 Jerald Turner all around talent with Universities scouting him but then he gets caught with an illegal substance within a couple of feet from the school.

2006 Andre Jones committed to the Texas Longhorns really don't know what really happened but was involved or not involved in a robbery or something.

That was only in recent years. Go back further and you will be amazed.

Many of you laugh and think it's not a CURSE, that this happens to many players throughout the country or that it's all in the mind and we ourselves make it a curse, whatever.

Truth is that there's a thick black cloud above this city and no it's not the pollution from Juarez. You will see it when you are entering the city from either Las Cruces or Van Horn.

To all talented athletes and to all that have dreams. Stay in the righteous path. Don't give into temptation for if you are truly talented and have a great future ahead of you it's a guarantee that your mind, body and soul will be tested. Be strong and hold on to your dream and never ever stop believing in yourself plus don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't and that includes yourself

The_RealTruth

It's really amazing like you said if we just look at it, and I do believe that it is our mental state as a city, I'm going say this and hope that it does not offend anyone but it is the truth, How come there are only a handful of hispanics in the NFL. My answer is because this city won't do what it takes to support all of it's athletes. I'm not hispanic but I have seen an awful lot of them here That have the same potential as as the Black athlete or White athlete and we show a little love to every one but we do'nt push them in the right direction. Yeah it's fun to get on here and talk a little trash with eachother but over all we need to break this curse and get more scouts looking at all of these kids, because they all have a shot. Most of these coaches need our help to get the word out and push these kids to excel. some of the parents need help understanding the process to the next step, and keeping these young guys out of trouble. We need a very positive influence to help get them going. Maybe I'm a little off but I think and believe that there is way too much talent here to sleep on. Good Job The_RealTruth

Dblock you hit the nail on the head by typing

Most of these coaches need our help to get the word out and push these kids to excel. some of the parents need help understanding the process to the next step,

Coaches have their hands full and most won't go that extra mile especially that extra mile for a kid with a huge ego problem and stubborn who won't listen to solid advice from coaches. Most parents that includes expert dads who think they know everything do not know the recruiting process. This site is a step in the right direction and I really don't know where EPgridiron is going with it but I hope they do alot more to help the true talented athletes of this community. So far things seem to be improving with El Paso teams winning in the 2nd round of the playoffs but there's a problem with a small percentage of talented athletes like 2 to 3 who go Division I every year considering all the schools we have here that is a very low percentage. Then we have a large number of talent who should be going Division ending up at Division II and III as well as Junior Colleges hoping to transfer to Division I in the future but come on it rarely happens.

Big problem if you ask me with many talented athletes getting the shaft for one simple reason, the lack of knowledge of how the recruiting process works and what they can do on their end but don't take the time to learn it for their futures sake.

And thats the facts, so for all you guys really wanting to know who was the greatest backs or players from the EP! the answer is that they were all great on the field, problem is how can we get them to be great off the field. Props to all you guys but lets break the curse.

Johnny Sanchez great running back and bright future ahead. Curse got him???

Some will say that he did it to himself. Yeah right, whatever. People should have been supporting this individual and other individuals when they are made aware of their talents years ago.

I understand kids don't heed advice and turn away from important advice but where there's a will, there's a way. That's what parents, friends, coaches and guidance counselors are there for.

You youngsters....i wish you could do your research and go waaaaay back and look at some of the best rb's the ep has seen......there have been some awesome rb's in this area...better than britton, etc....dont go with who you guys went to school with or played against...

Now The Truth....dude you beat me to it...my dad told me bout Willie Wright a long time ago....my dad would tell me about the wars he had against him since he was middle school...he played for Ross and then Burges and my dad was the middle linebacker for Guillen and Bowie......

And i dont know the name of the gentleman the recently passed away earlier this year. They did a story on his life and career here in EP for Irvin High when they went undefeated that year and were ranked 10th in the state!!! My cousin played against him when he was at Coronado and not too long ago i saw that game that on his video collection!!! That guy was unstoppable. Does anyone know his name????

These are all great backs, and did great jobs for there teams, but you cannot talk about running backs in EL Paso without adding Pat Norris from Irvin HS. He was ther real deal. He played in the early 90's and was a man playing with boys. He is missed by all who knew him. RIP PAT (you should not be forgotten)

I have also been told that Forrest Rich from Coronado was the man in the late 70's. He was ready to go to UT before the knee went out at the sun bowl. Love you man

Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

Jody was actually Oscars fullback at Lincoln, then moved to tailback his sophmore year. Oscar started at fullback for 3 years for the T-Birds.

Senior year Nalley rushed for just shy of 2,000 and Lopez has over 1,000 at fullback.

That was a potent running attack. Jody had the speed to get around the corner and Lopez woulod flat run you over and keep on going.

Last I heard Lopez was buying the "Rosas Cantina" from the Marty Robbins song "West Texas Town of El Paso".

By far the best running back to ever play High School Football in El Paso was Irvin High School's Patrick Norris. Nobody can hold a candle to this back. Not to down play any other running backs to come out of El Paso, and there have been some great ones, but he was and is by far the best to play here. After he ran you over, he out-ran the rest of your team, he was a very special player to watch. My next two would have to be Paul Smith from Andress, he is still playing in the NFL, he is now a member of the Denver Broncos, and then Singleton from Coronado who also made it to the NFL.

How does Eastwood's Alan Reid not merit a mention? After high school, started at U. of Minnesota, then the USFL's Memphis Showboats.

That notwithstanding, Singleton and Turner are the best I've seen. Toraino lost a big chunk of his junior year to injury. Turner always had low carries, based mostly on the fact that he was in constant trouble at Andress. Who could forget the night they punished him by only allowing the 5-10, 185-pounder to play just defense?

Versus EPH, no doubt.

Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

turner actually got low carries most of the time due to the fact that for most of his high school career andress had a 3 running back rotation in fontennette, turner, and bell, and sometimes scallion too. he didnt really get the most carries until his senior year..that being the year he screwed up ;[ its a shame

All yall is crazy I went to Andress with Gerald Turner he one of my best friends. He is by far the best running back ive seen play. when i was a junior he was a sophmore he had 2 carries for 134yds and 2tds. I was blocking on for him on both plays. I was a wide reciever and corner. He was being recruited by all kinds of schools Texas Tech, Miami, all kinds of schools. He was only 5'11" 210 ran a 4.42 break tackles run folks over and all. He was a beast and he only carried the ball maybe 13 times a game and got a 100yds each time atleast. He dont play no more cause he got caught up. Case was dropped in court, they set him up and it was all proven. They plotted and ruined his carrer. Eddie Brittion was just fast and soft as tissue. he fell over if the wind blew wrong. Cheron Figgs. that was a beast too.

If Josh would have taken over the game as a great running back should during the playoffs then would definitely list him as one of the greatest. But he did not show that greatness in the playoffs. Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

Man, there have been some great RB's in EP. Really, that is one position where EP has had some real talent.

1. Toraino Singleton
2. Steven Lee
3. Britton

In the most recent years, I think there the best two I saw were Britton at Montwood and Irvin Campbell from Austin. Irvin had 24 touchdowns in 2000, most in the city. He won 5 gold medals at the 1-5A track meet. Irvin Campbell was the best pure athlete I ever saw play football in El Paso (over Ransom, Brown, Britton, Jefferson who were all on another level). Sadly, he was a head case, and like so many others in the "Curse" never took advantage of his talent. There is speed, and then there is Irvin Campbell.

Britton is a beast, a good WR prospect, and he is the best high jumper in the Big 12. Yes, he is that athletic too, so I put him way over Campbell as the best since 2000.

Patrick Norris Lead the whole state in rushing in 5A with over 2000 yards in 1992.

Neon Edwards played for Irvin in 1980 signed with the Arizona Wildcats out of high school.

Andre Sessions he was a man among boys.

Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

Just to Clarify a few things
Pat Norris was not only a great back but a great guy and was a friend of my family. He led the state in 5-A rushing with 2005 yards on the season.

Caleb Quinn followed him the following year rushing for 2,166 yards 2nd in state missing the lead by 14 yds. Quinn was taken out of 6 games at half or at the beginning of the 3rd quarter including a game against Austin where he had 308yds rushing 1 rec for 62 and 7 TD all in the first half. He left Coronado because of a fight with Coach Brooks.

Other Backs that were great were Isaiah Lee, Ray Mickens, T Singleton and quite a few others

Josh goes in a category of good running backs with players like Jon Lane, Julian Davila, Diego Davila, Andrew Madrid, Mike Vargas, Waldo Rodriguez, Blake Downer and Eddie Mendoza. All good backs but not one or three of the greatest.

Re: WHO ARE THE TOP THREE GREATEST RUNNINGBACKS EL PASO HAS SEEN!!!!

1. Andre Sessions - Wing-T back set all kinds of records. A threat on every play to take it to the house. Maybe the most explosive back El Paso has ever seen.(Texas Tech)

2. Steven Lee - Another Wing-T back who was unstoppable. Short and stocking, Lee was like a bowling ball. Once he broke through the first level, he had sick breakaway speed. Started as a Freshman and a Sophomore in college before breaking his back. (Angelo State)

3a. Ray Mickens - Pure speed, if he got the corner he was gone. Because he made a name for himself as a corner, never really gets recognized as a great runner. (Texas A & M)

3b. Edward Britton - A lethal combo of size and speed combined with incredible line play, Britton was an outstanding back. However, he is now going to leave his mark as a wideout. (Texas Tech)

3c. Toraino Singleton- Now working as a performance coach in Rancho Cordova California, Singleton is probably the most physically gifted player in El Paso history. Teammates at UTEP use to marvel at his physique. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the NFL but legal problems prevented him from playing there. He did end up playing three years in NFL Europe for Hamburg. (UTEP)

Josh Flores, Tony Gonzalez, Eddie Britton, or anyone else you may think you have an argument for can't hald a candle to any one of these 5 Running Backs. 3 of them had NFL Careers, Smith is still in the NFL. A back that had to transfer for playing time in the top RB ever? Yes i know he ran for 2000+ yards for 1 season, but what did he do his Jr year at CHS, split time with a sophomore in Jody Nalley....good he was, but great,,,ummmm not even close.

Don't forget about Mendoza, for 3 years he was an explosive back, ran behind some of the best lines ever, if he had Coach Savage instead of Coto on the sidelined you might be hearing his name at some big school right now, that was arguably the most talented team in Bel Air History it's just so sad to know they had chances to do something but, Soto held them back. I believe Eddie got something like 3700 yards in his career, am I right?

It doesnt matter what Quinn did while he was at Coronado. He was 1st Team all state when he played at Irvin. Maybe that just shows which school had better coaches and had a better eye for talent. All I know is if you rush for over 2,000 yards and you are 1st Team-5A State Running Back you should be in the top 5 all time EP Running Backs.

then its gonzalez. You got to stop smoking that stuff. Gonzalez helped Riverside win back to back Area championships which no other running back has ever done for Riverside. Gonzalez carried the Riverside team against Chapin in 2004 and against Canyon Randall. Riverside would not have played at Texas Stadium if it wasn't for Gonzalez taking over those two playoff games.

The special thing about Gonzalez is that he came up big for his team when they needed it. He wasn't fancy. He wouldn't hurdle over anyone. He wouldn't spin around anyone. He just ran it up defenders stomachs and caused them pain. It explains why Riverside would win. A player like that helps control the clock and manage it well.

1. Steven Lee: Austin High School very shifty ran inside and outside (Junior year rushed for 1800 yards)(Senior year rushed for 2400 yards, FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE, 32 touchdowns, set the state single game rushing record his senior year 439 yards in one game)
2. Eddie Britton: tall fast speed was very deceptive when he got to the outside it was over.
