Franklin vs Midland Lee in 1997 when Franklin beat them for the first time in 7 years. Still the only team to beat them since '90 Andress.
Franklin vs Midland Lee in 1999 at the Sun Bowl. Almost upset the national champs.
Franklin vs Montwood in 2004 (Britton vs Grantham)

Acrossthenation i agree with you on the 97 franklin-lee game. I played in that game and it was crazy. Lee was ranked in the top 10 in the state when we played them. They had beat us 42-0 the year before. We pulled it out through some masterful ball control coaching from coach henry. No team had beaten a Permian basin team since 1990. That was a great team. We lost to Odessa by 2 points in the playoffs at Ratliff in from of 20,000. The next year we played Lee again and Cedric Benson was a sophmore in his first game. He had about 150 yards and they beat us 42-0 again and won state.

That was the first graduating class of Franklin. Coach Henry had those boys to mold since freshmen year. I don't remember where I read it but I recall coach Henry saying that that was the best team Franklin had put out up to that date because of the reason I stated above.

Re: greatest high school football game
Chips that was the 2nd graduating class at franklin. The amazing thing is the week before we played Lee, we lost to Bel Air in the season opener. The team had almost no experience because the year before was the first franklin class and they had a 4 year stater at almost every position. So we loose to bel air, everyone writes us off, and the next week we come out and beat Lee 21-14. Just goes to show what a great coach Henry was. He got us in the right mind to turn our season around after we lost to Bel Air. Parchman was Lee's coach then and he told Henry after the season that we were one of the best 2 teams ever out of El Paso. We dominated everyone in el paso from then on but lost to Irvin because of a dropped punt.

The greatest high school football I have seen was in 1993 Eastwood at Riverside was probably the first and last time that I have seen a game the was completly sold out here in El Paso they even had extra bleachers on the field! Well it was the last year Riverside was a 5A school and the winner of this game would claim the district 2-5A championship. I remember with less than a minute left in the game a Eastwood player caught the winning touchdown in the endzone corner then it took him about five minutes to get through the crowd around the endzone and back onto the field. Riverside argued the guy from Eastwood never had control of the ball but nobody could really tell cuz of all the fans around the the field. I know what I saw but being an Eastwood alum I aint telling :)

I agree with you about the first class as well. Phyically that team was huge. Every lineman was over 6'4 and weighed over 240. Almost as big as a college team. Even the running back, Robert Horton, was 6'3 and about 225 lbs. When they were seniors they lost to Lee (Lee had Josh Norman as their running back who also went on to play in the NFL as a WR), Irvin (when they had Stansbury), and Lubbock Coronado(who had Landon Johnson who is also playing in the NFL right now). I agree with you that team was the best in the history of the school and they would destroy the recent franklin teams.

The Franklin-Irvin game was also a great game that first year 1996. It was played at El Paso high. Sold out. Irvin had Stansbury, Terry Nichols, Jason Flores. I think the score ended up being 16-14 Irvin. There was so much hype that year Stansbury was the #1 rated QB in the nation. Great game.

Re: greatest high school football game
that chapin vs hereford game has to be the most exciting ever played by an ep team. there have been other "classics" as well. many of them have been mentioned here. one that hasn't was the eastwood vs ysleta bidistrict played at the sun bowl. the trooper pulled out a victory in the last minute ending the tribe's season. another great game was a rhs vs yhs game at ysleta the year after ysleta defeated the rangers at riverfront. javi quintana left his mark all over a sold out hutchins stadium, where over 10,000 fans were packed in. the rangers took a "victory lap" at hutchins repaying the indians for doing the same a year earlier at riverfront. what a game! bel air vs eastwood have hooked up in some classics as well. there was a 3-0 game at the sun bowl that may go down as the best defensive game played in ep. texas gridiron, what a game!

That's right about Franklin/Lee. The week before Franklin had lost 15-17 to bel air. It was horrible, Franklin had lost their starting runningback due to injury and they were 50 point underdogs. I think the fhs/lee upset is one of the best upsets in El Paso football history.
The irvin/fhs rivalry back then was also a good one, i remmeber they played their games at ephs.

Yes our top 2 running backs were hurt against Bel Air. Then Jacob Quinn stepped up against Lee and ended up with 1500 yards that year. He was the third string before that game and then he never looked back. Re: greatest high school football game
Let me take you back to the early 60s. Ysleta and Bel Air (the Highlanders were in just their 2nd season of varsity I believe) were both unbeaten in district (may have been unbeaten on the season but I won't go there totally) coming into the final game of the season. Winner would win district and go to playoffs, loser was done. They played at Kidd Field (before Sun Bowl was open) before a SRO crowd with many turned away. Hundreds outside the stadium lined the rock wall in one end zone to watch while many more were on the mountain watching. Bel Air was up 12-6 (maybe 13-7) with about a minute to go and Ysleta facing a 4th down at about mid-field. Tribe runs a statue of Liberty play that goes the distance, kicks PAT and wins it 13-12 (or maybe 14-13...it was a long time ago **** it).
The year before they had gone into the final in the same situation but Ysleta smoked em in the swamp about 26-6 or so.
I was about 10 or so and will never forget the looks of the Bel Air guys as the Ysleta back ran down the sideline right in front of their bench on his way to the TD.
I watched a ton of h/s football in EP back in the day and that was the best game I ever saw. I had a bro who had just graduated from Ysleta and a sis at BA. We had moved from the lower valley to Eastwood so she had to leave YHS and go to BA. But BA won district her junior or senior year and beat Odessa High in bi-district 10-7. The BA band broke into "the old gray mare just ain't what she used to be" as BA ran out the clock and headed off to get ready for their butt-whuppin' the next week.
Ah, a stroll down memory lane.
I also remember back then of some slobber-knocker games between EPHS and Austin.

I can believe no one remembers the 1975 Coronado team. Lost to Permian 14-0 in opener but that team ran the table after that and won bi dist, and regional game that set up rematch against Permian in Qtfinals. Sold out Sun Bowl where Coronado tied Permian 14-14 but lost game on penetrations 3-2. If they had won, they would have been in the final four. Permian lost in title game to Port Neches Grove. Taylor was a freak. I think only player to play in annual Oil Bowl which pits OK allstars against TX all stars. Here is recap from 76' Oil Bowl Game.
1976: Quarterback Darrol Ray of Killeen directed first half touchdown drives of 76, 38, 71 and 72 yards as Texas won 37-28. J.C. Watts of Eufaula quarterbacked Oklahoma in the game and threw a 38-yard pass to Kenneth Blair to set up his team’s first TD. Freddie Hurd broke an Oil Bowl record with a 77-yard touchdown run. Ray was the offensive MVP, and Lance Taylor of El Paso Coronado was the defensive MVP.

By the way, Lance Taylor of El Paso Coronado was on the 1977 all Southwest Conference team along with Earl Campbell when he went to play for the Longhorns at UT Austin. If Coronado and Franklin were stil one school, we might have a chance to get an El Paso team to win the state title but it the talent is watered down too much.

Let me educate some of you young bucks out there. The best two football games in the history of el paso-high school football happend back in 1993. yes everyone will have their opinion on this one but the difference between all of the games metion and the two i am about to talk about came from two teams that nobody believed they could win....two teams that had loosing season for a while......the games where Bowie vs. Eastwood at the SAC and Riverside vs. Irvin @ UTEP. Both Eastwood and Irvin where former playoff teams and Bowie and Riverside were struggling teams. Back then there was no such thing as 1-4a teams......5a all the way. Riverside beats Irvin to move on and to mark the beginning of a long stretch of winning season under coach Work. Bowie comes from behind to beats Eastwood on penetrations(27-27 tie no overtime back then) under a packed Soccoro Activity Complex. I am not sure of the attendace but there was a lot of people standing because there were no seats available. I was there!!!!!!!

OldEpGuy, What great memories. That year was 1961. The summary of Bel Airs season went like this. 8 victories and 2 loses. 6 wins in district. They recorded the most successful first year Varsity season on record (of that time). The team was voted favorite only against the weaker teams, yet they emerged victorious after playing some of the older and so- called stronger eleven. Before entering the Ysleta game, the Highlanders had the opportinity to be the first newly organized team to gain district championship, even after losing, they surpassed the expectations and predictions of all El Pasoans with the exception of the Bel Air partisans. This accomplishment was due to the combine efforts of the coaching staff, the team, the Highland Clan, and the student body and backers. By the way that was the first time Bel Air played Ysleta in varsity competition. That year they beat NMMI 54-0, Jeff 28-0,
Austin 28-6, EL Paso 14-12, Burges 34-6, La Tech 30-18, Irvin 43-8, Bowie 36-12 their losses were with Alamagordo and Ysleta.
Do you remember crusing to the Oasis after the game? or going up to Scenic Drive? I belive a couuple of years later they opened the first Pizza Hut, where every one wouuld hang out after the games.

Re: greatest high school football game
That Andress vs Chapin game in 2006 had 5 Division 1 players, making it one of the greatest games ever.
Chapin players who went D1
#6 Cliff Tucker Maryland University
#77 Dominique Hamilton Missouri University
#2 David Moore Fordham University
Andress players who went D1
#89 Andre Jones UT-Austin
#21 Chris Dowell UTEP
Game went down to the wire. Andress had their chance with 2 seconds left on the clock and blew it.

i'm thinkin the franklin vs. andress game about 6, or 7 years ago when it was no.1 vs. no.2. the game that went into overtime and was decided by a blocked field goal that was run back for a touchdown

Re: greatest high school football game
technically, fordham is division 1-AA. that is not the same as division 2 (which is lower), so I would say that they're division 1, even though it's not the division that everyone thinks of when they say D1.

Re: greatest high school football game
That's what people don't see mause, that fordham is D-1aa, and it was a D-1aa (which is now referred to as fcs now I believe) that beat a known D-1 Michigan. App St was the first to win the D-1aa champ three years in a row.

Re: greatest high school football game
Man-- what a great discussion. I haven't lived in EP since I graduated from Andress in 89, so I love hearing about all these great stories.
My faves:
Midland Lee/Andress X2 in 1991(?)... I only heard scores from these games, so someone *please* tell me about the stuff at the goal line. Beat Lee 10-3 in non-district, IIRC.
Lubbock Coronado/Permian, 1995 or 1996. Darrell Jackson was their WR (Tech) and I think Landon Johnson was there too. Anytime Permian loses, it's a special day, but I was at that game and saw PHS lose at home. That was the Lub. Coronado team that beat Franklin the next week when FHS had a FG try blocked with under :20 to go in the game and lost 17-15.

now i graduated just last yr from riverside ya and i heard stories about this game so i believe it and you should too but ya just like franklin beating midland lee in the late 90s, it had to be in 1960 when ysleta beat odessa permian.... now that being the only team to beat who would become the state champs (permian) later on in the 60s era now with that i can give my respect to the yhs 60s team

September 26, 1980, Canutillo vs. Riverside. Canutillo was 3-A and Riverside was 5-A, Eagle stadium, rain, mud and a lot of fans! Canutillo upset Riverside 14-7. Canutillo went on to win district and Bi-district defeating Denver City 30-0 and finally falling to Stamford in regionals.

Milkman, we might be thinking of the same Bel Air Eastwood game played in the 80's in the Sun Bowl. Bel Air won 3-0. Awesome game in a time when good teams had their regular season games at the Sun Bowl and local T.V. showed live feeds during commercial breaks.

Na, na, na, na. The best football game I've seen is the Montwood vs. El Dorado game (2008). Montwood trailing El Dorado 14-7 at the half then has an incredible momemtum change as Montwood comes back to win 21-16

hey montwood fan man, that game your talking about isn't even in the same league as the 1980 bel-air/eastwood game. 38,000 plus fans packed the sun bowl and the mountains. it was the most unbeliveable site your eyes would have seen. if you think the 2006 montwood/coronado game was a site to remember, that was nothing. not even close. those were the days when fans were fans, spectators were spectators and die hards were die hards. wow, what a sight to remember. i got to that game about 2 hours before kick off, to make sure i sat right at the fifty yard line. what a game.

nope not even close. games nowadays, don't seem to have the intensity from the 70's and 80's games. we are talking about crowds that you youngsters from today could not even imagine. my pick is still the bel-air/eastwood game from 1980. a close second is coronado/irvin in the snow, 1976.

2006 riverside rangers at the reservation..... rangers down 7-3 with like a minute left in the game and the unstoppable johnny sanchez scores to take the lead and give the rangers a 10-7 victory over the indians.... 2008 same place same situation with only 10 seconds left down 14-13 after missing the first field goal the rangers regain possesion and attempt another shot at a field goal... fans on the field for the indians to distract the kicker yet he makes his second attempt to give the rangers the lead and the win and giving the rangers a 13-0 record against the indians after 13 yrs since there last lost to ysleta....

2000 Austin v Coronado Austin lost 26-27. AHS was up by 21 points in the 4th quarter Birds came back to win it with Tiger Lyon at QB. Tbirds thought they had the night off but Irvin Campbell ran wild including a touchdown called back in the final seconds of the game.
