I was at the Utep game last week and Tony was brought up. Alot of my friends follow Utep closely and go to many of their practices. They said that Tony was doing great. One of my friends said that Tony left because of all the running backs Coach Banks was recruiting. It's probably true because even the other running back Jon Lane left Utep along with Tony.

Yea Huskie12, Omar Garcia is playing baseball and the roster lists him as a Catcher. From what I've heard they are having their fall world series games this weekend.

Gabe Flores is on the UNM baseball roster, he isnt playing football out there. He's a good pitcher, though, we should be hearing something about him soon.

So Tony Gonzalez quit because of incoming recruits?? That happens everywhere every year. I dont know why he would quit because of that

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

Well that might be that they aren't used to the competition. It's actually kind of understandable. These kids from EP are the stars of the city and never really get challenged by another person for their position throuhout their high school years. All of a sudden when they arent the star and they see someone coming in and challenging for their job, they arent used to it. So not knowing what to do in that position may lead to transfering or quitting. As long as they get an education, thats all that matters though

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

Yo omega, that's what threw me off too but apparently he is playing, and he's doing a hell of a job too...

He's at Tarleton University. He's the starting Quarterback Here's a little article:

"A Stephen Arnold field goal in overtime lifted Tarleton State to a 27-24 win over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.

Scott Grantham completed 16-of-21 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for Tarleton State (2-0), a Division II school. Roderick Smith rushed for 118 yards on 23 carries."

Also, Grantham has led his team to a 7-0 start and even has his team in the top 10 in the college football rankings of whatever division that is. Good job to him. If you want to see pics and/or stats go to the tarleton athletics website.

Checked Out the Fordham site today. John Skelton thre for a Career High 323 yds.

On one play they stated.

It took only one play for Skelton to cover the 51 yards, leading David Moore with a long pass with Moore out running the defense to the end zone and a 34-16 Fordham lead with 2:47 left in the third.

They beat the 3-Time defending Patriot League Champions Lafayette College.

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

Ralph then what is a Montwood team who did great as sophomores and are seniors now with lots of experience? The problem with you Ralph is that you are reading to much into Permians success this year and not Montwoods. The only quality win that Permian has this year is Euless Trinity that is it. Don't make them out to be more than what they are.

Ralph if you were a coach you would have your team already losing big by halftime simply on your mentaltiy alone. And no you're not being realistic. If you want to be realistic disect Permians wins this year really good and notice that the only quality win is against Trinity. Don't go by what others are saying on those out of town boards. Research bro.

http://stats.reporternews.com/football/boys/teams/680/

i do my research have you done yours? Permian has wreaked havoc creating turnovers and lit up score boards on defense, and recently came back to beat the number 6 team in the state.

Montwood has had quality wins, and they are talented. but they had what, 3 sophomores on the team that played against permian two years ago? 1-5a this year is not as strong as it has been in the past, or as strong as a lot of districts out there. the only true test they had, they lost 38-19. Permian has passed there tests and look lethal. If you would read my other posts, you would see that i support and think highly of montwood, but yes I am being realistic. And why bring up if i was a coach? im not a coach dont really plan on being one, so its stupid to even say that.

Ralph not everyone is like you and Sean. Some people actually BELIEVE in something. Like Mountain View who only had like 15 or 20 players and they beat Clint. Mountain View BELIEVED in something and they made it happen. Ralph don't you BELIEVE that you will major in Business or something??? Aren't you trying to make it happen? Would you appreciate that a large percentage of the city tells you that you will not major in anything? How can you say that a team will lose when they haven't even played? Simply by looking at their speed and size as well as results? Jefferson beat Chapin. Jefferson BELIEVED that they could do it and they did it. I'm not saying that BELIEVING in something will always give you an immediate result but it just might give you enough to hang in there and anything can happen when you just hang in there with a team.

Now enough of kiko, raz i cant agree with you on this, everyone can beat anyone, talent is a big part, but most of it is heart, mentality and who wants it more. If you see odessa this year, they are not that big, or talented, its just that the mojo mentality is back, if montwood matches the mental toughness and outworks them, they can beat permian. Remember IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING, im tired of el paso being underestimated, i played against Midland, tascosa, lubbock monterey, and i can guarantee you that they are high school guys just like we were. lets change this mentality guys

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

Ralph you act like you have been in the high school playoffs like 10 years. You were probably a varsity starter in one full season and experienced the playoffs just once in that one full season as a varsity starter.

The odds are against every team. You are going based on what is happening right now. You just don't know. New England Patriots versus Miami Dolphins and I'm sure you will say Patriots will win easy. The odds are against Miami because the Patriots are just too good and the Dolphins are terrible. Ralph you and most people are not realists, you are just going by what you see, hear and read which makes you a follower not a leader.

Example
Ofcourse a 8 year old boy will lose in a one on one basketball game against a 21 year old. We all know that. The odds are against that 8 year old boy due to size and experience but I'm sure the 8 year old boy will put up a fight throughout the game because he knows that the 21 year old might twist his ankle or get injured in some way which will decrease his level of play in turn giving the 8 year a slight advantage. The 8 year old will still most likely lose the game but he did his best till the final second.

Anything can happen you never know. Odds are against every opponent. Noone knows the future and that is why they play the game.

If you tell yourself you don't have a chance then you will not. You accept someone telling you that you don't have a chance, then you won't. No need to prove to anyone but yourself.

This makes no sense. So because, I see what the teams are doing, the dominance that Permian has shown over the season, know about the talent and work ethic they have, deduct the match-ups that would occur and come to the conclusion on MY OWN the permian is the better team, Im a follower? WRONG. Permian obviously has the better chance at winning the game and I highly doubt anyone with knowledge on this subject would disagree with me. Yes, anything can happen on game day, With montwood playing with almost no mistakes and a few made by permian, montwood could easily come out on top of this game. But you cant base you opionin on what MIGHT happen. Permian has been near flawless all season, and odds are that it will continue into the post season. Montwood, with the exception of el dorado has played simliar. And If both teams were to play this game their best, Permian would win, and thats my opinion. Just being real. But games aren't always played perfect. I am not a follower or a leader, Im just me giving out an opinion.

Your example is basically saying what i already said, anything can happen,. ive said it about a million times. But its a bad comparison, cuz montwood vs OP would be closer then a 8 year old vs a 21 year old lol.

and Im not a player for montwood, just a spectator saying, based on my own conclusion what would happen in this game. Montwood players dont have to accept or believe anything I say, and its better they dont listen to anyone, but the coaches and themselves. But that still doesnt mean i cant come on here an give my honest opinon.

HELL no. Even in the speeches, " Michigan made some mistakes and we capatilized..". And what about the all the other teams that were supposed to win and did? But its like ive been saying for you idiots who can figure it out. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. Doesnt mean it will but it might. You just can expect to win because the other team made some mistakes. You gotta practice hard be prepared and play excellent football. If montwood would play them, I would root for montwood, hope they win. Id be waiting for OP to mess up and montwood capatilize. Ralph you would come on and say either
A. Montwood won because of the 2 turnovers that they got and turned converted into points. I told you that Montwood could win if Odessa did not play flawless.

B. Montwood won because of 3 suspended Permian key players who were caught with an illegal substance the night before the game. I told you all that Montwood would win if Odessa screwed up some how.

I also think they should play from where they are from. But to many loop holes to fill. With the magnet schools allowing them to switch who they play for to uncles, aunts, and cousins addresses they can borrow.

But, everyone has their own opinion on what is best for them. If a player feels they can do better and get recognized at a different school, then so be it. I guess that is what the loop holes are there for. There are many small schools that have players being watched. You don't have to be in a large school to accomplish this. That is my opinion.

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

people do not always change schools for athletic reasons tho. for instance, I grew up in the NE but we moved to the westside towards the end of middle school, so all my friends were going to chapin anyway. also sometimes ppl are actually interested in the magnet programs for career purposes, even though they may be athletes as well. I also know some athletes that were in our magnet who lived in the chapin zone anyways, but were still in magnet because that's what they were interested in. on the other hand, you have the ysleta schools (open distict) who who allow ppl to go to wherever they want within YISD for pretty much no reason...

point is, I do not think you should decide to go to a particular school (for instance, your home school) just because you are afraid misinformed ppl will call you a traitor if you do otherwise. it is also not a bad thing for athletes to consider possible careers other than sports since the majority of ppl are not talented enough to play at the professional level. by all means work hard at sports, but do not put all your eggs in one basket. study, do well in school & have other options open

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

The Missouri Tigers lost only one starter off the defense that shut down Darren McFadden and Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. Junior Jaron Baston seems set to step in for Lorenzo Williams at nose tackle. But it is the guys behind Baston and Ziggy Hood at tackle who have been turning heads in spring practice.

Dan Turner

Resonno has added 35 pounds since signing last February.
Redshirt freshmen Dominique Hamilton and Terrell Resonno have risen to second on the depth chart at the two tackle spots after the first scrimmage of the spring. It is a move that surprised some…but not Hamilton or Resonno.

"That's my roommate right there," said Hamilton, a native of El Paso, TX. "We told the two guys in front of us we were going to come take their positions."

That may sound a little brash coming from a kid that has never played a down in college. Leave it to his position coach to keep him grounded.

"Any time we move a guy down, we tell him it's his job to go get his spot back. Whenever we move a guy up, we tell him he has to hold on to that spot now," said defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski. "It would be just as easy for them to move right back down."

Providing push to Hamilton and Resonno are Andy Maples and Jason Townson, a pair of junior college products who redshirted a season ago. That duo holds an experience edge, perhaps, but Hamilton and Resonno have certainly made their presence known.

"He's doing really good," Gary Pinkel said of Resonno in particular. "He has put on a lot of size. He's got a great future and he's a really good young prospect."

Resonno signed with Missouri as a 250-pound hybrid defensive end/tackle out of Jefferson City High School. He is now listed at 6-foot-6, 285 pounds. Size, meanwhile, was the one thing Hamilton had always had. He said he came to Missouri at 315, then dipped all the way down to 270. Like his roommate, he is now listed at 6-foot-6, 285, but says he is closer to 290. The youngsters are the tallest linemen on the roster according to the spring depth chart.

"I know I've got to stay low. I've been dealing with that for a long time," Hamilton says of his height. "I've got to get a lot lower to keep my pad level down."

While the height can be a detriment, Kuligowski said it can also serve as an advantage.

"More than height, it's an arm length thing," he said. "Those guys both have long arms."

Both players have had good teaching in the past year. Hamilton plays the position vacated by Williams while Resonno has been learning behind Hood.

"Ziggy Hood has really taught me a lot," Resonno said. "He was my big brother when I came in here and he really helped me a lot. He is good at keeping you motivated every day."

Kuligowski said the key is for Resonno and Hamilton both to keep getting better.

"We need them to be ready in case one of the top guys goes down," Kuligowski said. "And they're not there yet."

Perhaps not. But in listening to the some, they might not be far off.

Rufus Brown, Austin QB from '99 won a National Championship at Florida State (as a cornerback). he played with the Redskins for a game or two, bounced around NFL Europe, and I believe is currently playing in the Arena Football League with the Arizona Rattlers.

The most athletic QB I ever saw at in El Paso, bar none was Rufus Brown. So many guys claim to have 4.4 speed who don't, and aren't close. Rufus had 4.4 speed.

Jamar Ransom was incredible too, does anybody know where he ended up after playing four years at Oklahoma State?

BIO: Three-year starter used at both outside linebacker and strong safety. Led the team in tackles as a senior posting 99/7.5/2.

POSITIVES: Explosive defender with good size/speed numbers. Quick up the field, fluid changing direction and takes good angles to the play. Has a burst of closing speed and makes plays out to the sidelines. Splits blocks, redirects to the action and wraps up tackling.

ANALYSIS: A high-intensity defender, Ransom has potential on the outside in a 34 defense or could be used as a traditional strong safety if he improves in pass defense.

Huge guy, was mvp several times along with his brother Mike Mossman and played on all star team his senior and I believe junior year. Last I heard one of the boys was a security officer for the FAA, but wasn't terribly reliable informant. If anyone has any information on either of the Mossman boys, I would really appreciate it!

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

Update on former El Pasoan Edward Britton

I have a very close family friend who graduated from Tech. So naturally he is a die-hard fan. We have been going back and forth ever since it was announced we would play each other next year. He sent me an article from the Lubbock paper saying Britton was being moved from back to receiver. The incoming freshmen were too talented for him to get playing time in front of them even with his experience. If he was at UTEP, he would've seen significant playing time backing up Thomas next year. Oh well, every kid has their choice. I just wish that for once some of the better players from here would finally figure out that this is not the UTEP of old. And UTEP can compete with just about anybody....

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

Thats sad to hear that Britton has been moved from his position to accomodate upcoming freshman. He really had a lot of potential to be great. But who knows, maybe he will do a good job at receiver and get some playing time in that rotation... I still think he shouldve taken the offer from Nebraska instead of going to Tech but lets just see how this move will play out for him.

Re: Former EP Football Athletes

I did not know he ever played back at Tech. In fact, he has been a wide receiver since he arrived and has done very well at wide receiver with 48 receptions last year for 631 yards. He was a receiver as a freshman as well catching 10 passes.

Did I miss something or are we in 2006 again?
