The Coronado vs Franklin game was a good hype game, that ended up the same as always. Coronado has not been able to keep up with Franklin the past 3 or 4 years.Good rivalry games should always be close, even when nothing is at stake. It is 2 schools that just hate each other and want to battle.

The only thing that matters is that the two teams have a burning desire to defeat the other and they play their best games against eachother. Rivalries bring out the best performance in players. ALL rivalries are special ... to their particular schools. Even if the game is meaningless, you can't say that Jeff vs. Bowie or El Paso High vs. Austin are not big games for those schools. Every school, no matter their record or standing, has a great rival and the kids play real tough on that game. It's great.

Now, as far as rivalries that have had some meaning in standing or play-off contention, I think Franklin v. Montwood and Riverside v. Del Valle have had the most impact in the last couple of years.

GRA is absolutely correct. El Paso high and Austin is huge for those 2 schools. Franklin and Coronado at the Sun Bowl is a major one for them. Riverside and Del Valle has been growing over the years. Eastwood and Bel Air is also a good one. A Rivalry means a lot to the schools and fans. Eastwood and Bel Air believe theirs is the best. El Paso high and Austin believe theirs is the best and one of the oldest rivalries. They're all great rivalries.

I say the best rivalry in 5A is between Franklin and Montwood. This is the first year that Franklin had a mediocre season and last year Montwood didnt do so well. I remember I used to play for Fabens in JR High and we hated Clint but they always whooped on us... haha

ranger stadium is on the smaller size. i think it seats 2500. about 3000-3500 were at the game last year. many fans never took a seat, but were standing or walking around. i have been to chs vs fhs in the sun bowl where there were 5000 or so fans. i am not sure how many were there last year.

I would have to say Riverside and Parkland just because we lost our title to the last year. It's going to be tough because the Ranger football team has had many changes. Biting Rabbit I agree. Coronado and Franklin is a rivalry but only for the Coronado and Franklin families. Franklin and Montwood is a more city rivarly where you have other team fans attending the game.

Franklin and Montwood has become the best Ep high school rivarly.

Of course Franklin v. Montwood is the best rivalry.

It has everything that good rivalry games have:

1. Distance. They're far enough to have the travelling team leave DURING school to beat the 5 O'clock traffic, but close enough to bring East side fans to the west side and west side fans to the east side.

2. Classic East vs. West. Thats the PRIME of all rivalries. Who comes out better? East or West.

3. Great Teams. The majority of the time these two teams play, they are on an equal status to each other. Both Undefeated, both playing for the District Championship. Winner Takes All. Even when one team is on an "off" year, Winner Takes All.... or in our case this year Half.

4.The rivalry doesn't stop at football. The past few years, Boys basketball have been on the line at these gyms. Fans PACK the gym regardless of where its at. Baseball is the same way. This is THE game to win for each sport.

5. Not only are the Teams on the field competing, but their respective Fans. Who's Louder? Who has more Spirit? Who can cause false starts and such. Home Field advantage is virtually thrown out the window.

That my friends, is a Rivalry.

i remember a few years back before andress went down to 4-a when they had to battle it out with franklin and montwood for district! i remember when franklin beat andress, montwood over franklin, and andress beat montwood at the sac it a PACKED house! those WERE some rivals! just too bad andress is afraid to move back up.. but as of now:
5-A = Franklin vs Coronado/Montwood
14-A = Chapin vs Andress
24-A = Riverside vs Parkland

Thats another thing about Rivalry games that i missed eclumex.

Rivalries are about the competitiveness between the schools, but its not just them who care about the outcome. Sure, they might not be as excited about it as much, but hey, you still have your bets going for a specific team.

Chapin hasn't been around long enough to really get a rivalry going, but.....Chapin v. Austin and Chapin v. Irvin are always good because of the proximity within the neighborhood, and most of the kids went to the same Middle Schools.
Chapin v. Andress has been a great game all three times they played (and determined the District Champion the last two years), but Andress fluxuates 5A to 4A too much to build into a true rivalry. We will see in February if Andress stays 4A or moves back to 5A.

There is always SOMETHING when we play chapin...The week of practice we have before, is probably the best week of practice of the season!! Before those two games we played against them we go crazy in da locker room and even CRAZIER ON THE FIELD.

Socorro vs. Bel Air next year will be the best rivalry game because:
1. Its the battle for BIG RED pride
2. Rick Soto,Bel Air's former coach,now coaches at Soco.
3. Will most likely have playoff implications for the final spot.
4. Last game of the regular season for both teams so seniors should be pumped.
5. And both teams definitely do not like each other!

Montwood and Coronado are not a big rivalry. Coronado vs Franklin, Franklin vs Montwood are much bigger rivalries. If anything they are probably the biggest rivalries in EP. In my opinion they are.

You guys are only saying teams from your era. You have to look at El Paso football when it first began up until now.

There are long running rivalries amongst teams that used to be good. I'm more interested in rivalries between the best teams in El Paso that mean something or will dictate a district championship.

That's what I'm trying to tell elcumex. Montwood and Franklin, Coronado and Franklin are awesome games but when you have Grandma's, Grandpa's, Uncle's and Aunt's coming from other States to watch a high school football game, that's amazing.

I deffinitely appreciate what you guys are saying and having several generations of fans in the stands does make a great rivalry. That is one way to look at a great rivalry, even though the teams won't make the playoffs. It is as if that game is their district title because they can't get the real one.

Question? Those teams have been around for much longer then lets say Franklin and Montwood. In 50 years from now those schools will still be older then Franklin and Montwood. Does the fact that they are older mean that they will always be a better rivals? Does being an older rivalry really mean it is a better rivalry?

Both great rivalries in their own right but I have to go with the game that dictates the best in district if not the whole city each year.

I went to Bowie and my wife went to Coronado (that's why I choose my web name)and hands down the best rivalries in the city are: 1) Franklin-Coronado, for the intensity and quality of the players and 2) Bowie-Jefferson, for the honor and pride regardless of the records.

It is so intense for both the players and the fans. During the game u can see serious fights and tears. during that week your filled with so much pride but that game can turn u into a monster.
MEAN GREEn: You say the only reason we play at the sunbowl is because of some "action" that occured opnce upon a time. Well, i think that should prove how much the rivalry of that game consumes you. Right, down to the underground t-shirts.

Gonna go back about 10 years. . . Parkland vs Cathedral. The Irish would sneak on over the night before the game and paint a big "C" on the 50-yard line. During the game they woud throw corn tortillas at the players.

Can't pass up another game that back in the 80's and 90's meant something Irvin vs Andress.

No wonder El Paso didn't do well in the playoffs back then. They didn't take their football serious. Too busy throwing tortillas, graffiti, fighting and all that other crap. Focus and make El Paso proud **** it.

Back in the days was Canutillo vs. Gadsden. They had to quit playing each other. It was that intense.

hey what about socorro? no one ever mentions socorro and a rival school. is it because there isn't another school within a few miles of our campus to really consider them a rival? i feel we need another school somewhere along alameda or n. loop to compete for "bragging rights" in the valley. i think that would really spark some enthusiasm in our sporting programs as well as other academic areas. just a thought!

Yeah and why not ad another 100 years before an El Paso team gets past the 3rd round of the playoffs. More schools, more taxes and more embarrassment in the playoffs from schools throughout Texas.

Franklin-Coronado is not the best rivalry in town because a true rivalry should be competitive with each team winning on occation (see UT-OU, Michigan-OSU, Dallas- NY Giants). FHS CHS has been dominated on one side. I think Coronado may have only won twice. Once when Franklin had only juniors no seniors and once in 2000. Most of the games have been blow outs in favor of FHS.

To Everyone who said Andress vs Irvin. Thats it baby I don't Think that these new schools such as Chapin,Montwood and Franklin ect have enough history yet although their working on it. But a rivary like Andress and Irvin goes back into the 60's and 70's and it is so special that people that I went to Andress with still come out to see this game. I have some teammates that fly in just to see it and the folks that went to Irvin pretty much do the samething and we all kick it together and have a blast. It's a special rivalry. Some of us have lost teammates over the years and It is more like a tribute to their memory or when we kicked their or they kicked ours.
