Re: middle school success

Actually the majority of the kids at Bassett go to Austin High School, there are just a few select neighborhoods that move on to Chapin. Of course, some of the better kids will go to Chapin citing it is for academics when in actuality they would just rather be involved in athletics at Chapin as opposed to Austin.

Austin is still predominantly an Austin feeder school.

Re: middle school success

the middle school with a good program has to be valley view. I played at valley view three years ago and my 7th grade year is when the program started rising. They finally got some other good coaches to help coach richie and coach hernandez. These guys were awsome. They really got us ready for high school football. Now Coach Richie is the head coach and the school is a power house. All their other coaches are x dv players so there is alot of pride in this program.

Hillcrest has to be considered as one of the best MS programs in the city. We did fall a bit this past year due to a head coaching change but coach fernandez will continue the tradition established by coach Nunez and coach Flores. Despite the change in HC, the program was still in contention for the district title.

BASSETT MIDDLE SCHOOL PUTS OUT THE BEST ATHLETES PERIOD!!! GREAT COACHING STAFF AND KIDS THAT WANT TO PLAY WITH FOR THEM...THEY MAKE FOOTBALL ENJOYABLE WHILE KEEPING THEM AT A WINNING PACE!!! WHEN THE GO TO HIGH SCHOOL THATS WHEN MOST ATTITUDES CHANGE..THE KIDS THAT GO TO CHAPIN GO TO A PROGRAM THEY CAN RELATE TO CAUSE ITS GOOD...WHILE THE KIDS THAT GO TO AUSTIN GO TO A PROGRAM THAT IS NOT AS GOOD AS THEY THOUGHT AND QUIT OR BECOME LAZY AND WHAT NOT THATS WHY THERE NOT AS GOOD AS CHAPIN. CHAPIN MAKES THE KIDS WORK AND HAVE GREAT DISAPLINE TO KEEP THE KIDS IN LINE WHILE KEEPING FOOTBALL FUN!!! I WENT TO BASSETT AND DONT GO TO EITHER AUSTIN NOR CHAPIN BUT HAVE MANY FRIENDS THAT HAVE OR ARE GOING THREW THIS.....

Yeah, I was there too. Their 8th graders were in the Championship game for their division too, but they lost that one to Hornedo I believe.

The championship games are not EPISD vs YISD though. I think they are county wide since Horizon and Canutillo were competing in the championship games for their respective divisions as well.

i just think there are some great middle school coaches out there that dont get reconized. There a bunch of great dominant programs. What i know about the one i attended valley view is that they were apowerhouse back then they struggled due to coaching changes and ever since coach Richie got there he has brought that program back to prominence more importantly he is an outstanding coach. Props out to all middle school coaches

Re: middle school success

fhs, there is no doubt that Hornedo is a good program but the city championship has only been in existence for two years, therefore the 4 years you mentioned seem a little exagerated. The first year the city championship was worked out YISD swept the two divisions it participated in, plus Hillcrest won both 7th and 8th grade championships in the first ever city championships.

Re: middle school success

Wrong facts speak for them selves and facts also make records. Call EPISD and ask them the first city championship game for episd was HMS and THS middle hms won. the Second the same and they won. The third was Cordova HMS won and the third was this year Riverside HMS won. So as a follower I might be wrong three. However. 10 city is right I know for a fact. Now Yisd might have done the chmp thing longer don't know I do know there ath director was at the game not our's . Too much FBI stuff with coaches.

i do not think you can judge a teams success by their middle school success. henderson always had powehouse middle school teams, but they never amounted to anything at jefferson. hillcrest had middle school powerhouses that did not translate into too much at bel air. don't trust that you jv team won district last year and will win district at the varsity level. there are too many factor to consider.

I remember my middle school year we didnt win the championship but we came in second to a parland team that picked up a player from the hurricane katrina disaster. Without him we would of beat them. We also happened to fumble 5 times in the red zone and 2 of those were inside the 5 so we should of of won the cahampionship. but like the great coach Richie said no excuses we had our chance and let it go by. Eventhough we didnt win we learned so much from coach Richie and his coaches that got us ready for high school and thats what i think middle school is all about, getting ready for high school football were the tru football players play.

Re: middle school success

Middle school success can only be measured by the success of the high school they feed into. If a high school has success one year and falters the next....that shows that the feeder schools are not producing quality players. Nolan Richardson Middle feeds into Andress and Chapin. These two schools are successful year after year. I would have to say that Bassett, Canyon Hills, and Nolan R. are consistantly the top Middle school programs in our city!!! Northeast....easily the best football in El Paso!!!

Re: middle school success

fhs.... the results of a successful middle school program shows in the success of the high school they feed into. The consistancy of a winning program at the high school level depends on the consistant winning at the middle school level. Do the math....Chapin and Andress have success year in and year out because of the quality middle school programs that feed into them. Hornedo may have success on occasion, but it stops there. Not much happening after the kids move on to high school!!!

I've seen what El Paso has to offer in middle school and high school football. The only two programs worth mentioning with other west texas football programs are Chapin and Andress (Franklin too thanks to Coach Walker!!)!!! I am from the Odessa area where REAL football football is played.....I DO KNOW WHAT GOOD FOOTBALL IS!!! I played 4 years @ Odessa Permian in the early 80's...again....I KNOW FOOTBALL. Some of the 2A teams around Odessa would give almost all El Paso schools a good game if not beat them handily!!! You are probably from El Paso, where football is a distant second to soccer and a good trio!!!

Re: middle school success

I guess you just don't get it...I know what I am talking about from experience. I am loyal to high school football. I have traveled to every Chapin football playoff game and have not missed one local game since the school has opened up. I have seen many of the El Paso high school programs, and I have not been impressed with very many of them especially 2-4A. Again, I am from an area that bleeds football, and your boys are bread as football players because it's a way of life. I know what it is to be part of a winning program that has made an impact on high school football statewide. Bottom line is that in MY opinion, Richardson and Bassett are the premiere middle school programs in El Paso....the success is in the high schools they feed into. Without good middle schools, the high schools would not have success!! Again.....Chapin and Andress--the best El Paso has to offer!!!

Glad to see we agree on something!!! Franklin is tops in El Paso...especially now that Walker is there!! We just need to support El Paso football regardless of who feeds who or who has a better program. Hopefully we will see El Paso go deeper into the playoffs and eventually win a state title!!

Re: middle school success

For those of you saying things like "Just because walker is at franklin!" Give me a break. Franklin was already an established program once walker got there. It's ironic that he got there after Franklins worst season, or it's not ironic to many , it's just the final piece to the puzzle to many. A great coach from Chapin goes to Franklin, the school w/ the most enrollment and magically he becomes a God at franklin without him coaching a game. We should all give credit to the franklin coaches who established that program.
They go by the name of: Henry, Grijalva, Camili, Marlin, Anderson, Smith. I could go on.

Nothing against walker, I'm just getting tired of people talking about walker like he's going to establish a program that was already established. When he does what grijalva did in 05 which was win an area championship and possibly take his franklin cougar team to Texas stadium, I will see him as a candidate for best Franklin coach in history. But right now, coach walker is the coach walker who was a great coach at Chapin. Until Walker wins Franklin an area game, that's when you can maybe say he's better than Grijalva, but right now Grijalva is the better coach no doubt, it's in the paper, it's everywhere. Walker can't beat 2 outta town opponents, Grijalva can. I wish coach walker good luck this year and I will be at games to support him.
Chips - Pancherello

Aug 20, 2007 - 10:49PM
Re: middle school success

Grijalva was the first coach in El Paso history to win area in 5A. He is also the first coach in El Paso history to beat two out of town teams. I agree with Acrossthenation I really hope that Walker can take Franklin to the next level but until he does that, do not make it seem as though the previous staffs were not great because they were.

Re: middle school success

I agree!! Grijalva was real good, and Walker will continue the tradition at Franklin. We are not saying that Walker will start a winning tradition at Franklin, rather he will be the exclamation point to the program. He is the one that can lead them further than they have ever been!!! Grijalva would have done the same if he would have stayed!!

man its got to be both riverside middle school, and rio bravo middle school. riverside has always had a good middle school football program. rio bravo used to be bad but now with there coaches they are turning everything around and becoming a dominent program. just 2 years ago they won the city title. and riverside has like what a good number of city titles? another school is hillcrest they are one of the best in the city. yet once they go to high school everything changes bel air football is horrible and with the coaches and there schemes to success they are failures and it makes the players play and look bad. not dissing nobody from bel air just the football program you guys need new coaches just like ysleta same stuff there schemes to win are just horrible. anyways back to middle school another is eastwood middle always a good football team and desert view those are the 2 dominent programs in the yisd division 1

This Brown 7th grade team is a machine. I've seen a lot of good teams before but this team has a certain chemistry and determination that I have not witnessed with other teams. Of course it starts with good leadership and coaching and the Brown coaching staff has excelled in these areas since the first day of practice. As for the team, Brown's defense domintated all season as evidenced by the margins of victory each week, including last night's championship 62- 18. As for the offense, I have never seen a more proficient well run offense for a team this age. The team ran out of various formations all season and was never stopped. The unique thing about these kids however is that each Saturday (and Thursdays !) they played as a team, no egos, no superstars, just a bunch of kids having fun. Great job Coaches Alvarado, Peden, and Timbroke. Hopes these kids stick together and contiunue to play in the future. I can't wait till my little one has the opportunity to play for Brown one day.

Hell yeah valley view is good now! Hillcrest had dominated for a while but not the past 2 years. Every year it seems like valley view had been 1 win away their 7th grade team finally did it! They got rocked in the city championship but those boys are good. They were missing their star player for the championship game but another kid played just as good. Watch out for this team if they stay together all their way to varsity for del valle. This team is the real deal

CRY; That is a good name for you since that is what you are doing don't bash a good power house program. Let's let the facts speak for themselves these are straight from the school if you want go see the banners in the building:
1999- 7th grade 1st ever district champions
2000- 8th grade division 2 champions
2001- 7th grade division 2 and district champions
2003- 7th grade division 2 champions
2003- 8th grade division 2 champions
2004- 7th grade division 2 and district champions
2004- 8th grade division 2 champions
2005- 7th grade division 2 champions and 1st ever city champions.
2005- 8th grade division 2 champions and 1st ever city champions.

*1999- was the first time yisd had a district championship Hillcrest won...
*2005- was the first time different districts got in the mix to create a city championship; there are 3 divisions Hillcrest won both 7th and 8th division 2 city championships in it's first year...

Camino Real has only won 1 district championship and 1 city championship you can not compare Camino to Hillcrest. Get your facts straight before you open your mouth. If you don't believe call Athletics at Central office they have all these records....

That's all you are doing Hillcrest won Division 2 this year again and made the championship game this year in the 7th grade. What I am saying is you can't compare Camino to Hillcrest. Hillcrest is way ahead of Camino. The only reason Hillcrest has been struggling a little bit the past couple of years is because there great coaching staff has left. Once everything settles down again, Hillcrest will dominate as always!!!! So before you open YOUR MOUTH know the difference in tradition between an established one and a wanna be....Hillcrest has been around for a long time!

Yes, this is a site based on football. No, not just varsity. Remember varsity programs come from good foundations made at the middle schools. Traidation plays a big part in that. What you teach at the middle school should be taught at the high school. Some how the past post got lost in what this was about. Good luck to all high school and middle schools in developing the best this city has to offer.

CRY, CRY, CRY

Camino will never be like Hillcrest. If you go head to head Hillcrest has BEAT Camino more times than Camino has beat Hillcrest. Tradition does matter unfortunately you don't have a clue because Camino doesn't have any. Like I mentioned before look at the stats and records and head to head battles Hillcrest dominates every category over Camino. Tradition does matter ask Montwood, Franklin and all the dominate High Schools they will tell you it does. You get used to being dominate which leads to TRADITION. You were the one that wanted to compare Hillcrest and Camino, you can't. Camino has a long, long, long way to go. It's like comparing the Steelers to the Panthers. An established winning program to one that is barely starting...and if you did not know the Steelers do have TRADITION... and for the record back when YISD only had a District Championship between Division 1 and Division 2 Hillcrest did beat Division 1 Schools in the championship (Eastwood Middle and Riverside Middle). So Division 2 schools can compete with Division 1 Schools....

Re: middle school success

georgia-pacific who freaking cares about the sports section in the paper. If people want to talk about the schools on this board or any board throughout the internet then that is what matters.

People typing their opinions matters more than what some person writes in the sports section of a paper.

It's the internet super highway and the old ways like newspapers are prehistoric. Soon there will no more paper and everything will be digital or HD.

georgia-pacific get with the program and talk about something you want to talk about on this board or some other board instead of waiting to see what some person from a paper writes about in order to talk about.

georgia-pacific with the internet and all the blogs that exist every person is actually an editor in his own right.

you guys should both stop arguing neither team from camino or hillcrest wouldve done anything this year in division 1. The level of competetion is not that good over in div2. I've been to games of both divisions and div 1 seems more competive. I event heard eastwood knolls didnt even have a 7th or 8th grade team not sure which one. Ranchland has maybe like 25 kids between both programs. Once again camino or hillcrest wouldce of been 4th or 5th place if they played div 1 teams

Cry, I'm glad you are done arguing because you were the one trying to compare Hillcrest to Camino. If you want to say Camino is better right now that's your opnion, but if you want to compare the two that's a different story. I'm glad that you have finally admitted to Hillcrest being more dominant as a program. When you compare both it's from the past to now. Camino doesn't come close. Camino might be coming up a little bit, but has a long, long, long way to go to catch up to Hillcrest and it's tradition. Take baby steps cry. First find out what tradition means since you did not know what it meant, and now all of a sudden you are saying you are going to take it away from Hillcrest ha, ha, ha...You can't take that away it has been set for many, many years something Camino doesn't have. If you say Camino is doing good right know, what have they done? Wait a couple of years to see if they continue then open your mouth til then keep it shut like you promised....

Re: middle school success

Hey fan just to let you know Division 1 schools play Division 2 schools during the year. Hillcrest 7th grade did beat a Division 1 school this year and like I said before Division 2 schools have beaten Division 1 schools. Hillcrest beat two of them back when they only had a District Championship. You mentioned numbers, that is true Division 2 schools are smaller in numbers than Division 1 schools, but they can still compete with them. Watch for it next year, I think it's the 1st or 2nd game of the year when Division 1 and 2 play each other and you will see that the games are pretty close.

Re: middle school success

The reason Hillcrest has gone down the past 3 years is because Coach Nunez and his coaching staff are not there anymore. Coach Fernandez is the new head coach and he stinks he has taken the program down BIG TIME. He is one sorry coach. I hope they get somebody else, because Hillcrest always has talent. So fan you are probably right that they couldn't compete against Div 1 schools this year, but coaching has alot to do with it I'm sure you will agree. Middle School is where they mold the kids and with a sorry coach like Coach Fernandez it brings down everything and affects the feeder school.

Re: middle school success

I agree with you because these young kids do need a coach who can motivate them. Their are a couple of sleepers who are not that good in middle school and eventually turn into studs in high school. But it all starts in the middle school and yes a good coach is needed to keep these young kids head straight

For the past years desert view has benn in the middle of the pack but was only top dog one year.. They do work very close with the high school though. Re: middle school success

Viking my friend that is the problem with many coaches out there. Only because they love and know the game of football does not necessarily mean they can coach it.

My wife loves and knows how to cook good food but there is no way in hell she can instruct a classroom with over 30 potential chefs much less have her own cooking show. Oh don't get me wrong I believe in her but when it comes to criticism about her cooking she will chew your head off and spit it out like freaking Ozzy Osborne. Tell her she put a bit to much salt on her lasagna, you best run and hide.

My friend there is a huge difference between loving and knowing something, to teaching and instructing something. People out there need to distinguish that and stop being in denial.

In other words people need to stop lying to themselves and be honest with themselves.
