Ada Dark Knights scrimmage leads to defeat

Camelot has arrived at Ada's War Memorial Park once again. The Ada Dark Knights minor league football team will be playing at the Ada park for several dates throughout the summer. Owner and head coach PJ Siefker is a 1992 graduate of Delphos Jefferson, and started the team in Delphos back in 2006.

A member of the Great Lakes Football League, the Ada Dark Knights scrimmaged last Saturday against the Tri-County Raiders from St. Marys. The game was won by the Raiders, who are members of the Interstate Football League, 39-14.

Coach Siefker noted that the team has a lot of new players who need to keep practicing together. "We knew we had things to work on," he said. "The defense was impressive, but got worn out." The offense started moving the ball in the second half and scored two touchdowns.

Matt Taylor, head coach for the Raiders, commented that the Dark Knights "had a lot of heart...were hard hitting." This was the first scrimmage for both teams this season.

"The team wants to win," Coach Taylor said. "They're big competitors and our goal is to win the championship."

The game was filled with proof that both sides were excited to be on the field. Cheers after every good play, and animated announcing from the press box kept the audience involved and having a good time.

The Raiders struck early in the first quarter, when a sack of ADK quarterback Steve Hellman in the end zone resulted in a two-point safety. The rest of the first quarter was scoreless, with the ball changing hands several times.

The Raiders quarterback, Brad Frazier, threw a pass that Dark Knight Troy Major "Weezie" intercepted, but the Dark Knights couldn't work their way down the field and had to punt the ball.

The Raiders were in possession at the start of the second, and after two plays, a pass from Hellman to James Mabry resulted in a touchdown, but no extra point, to put the Raiders up 8-0. The ADK first down was short-lived when another pass interception gave the Raiders another short possession before ADK got intercepted again. This last run of the half did earn the Raiders another touchdown when Matt Evans caught the pass on third and 12 and ran in to the end zone. With a good extra point, the Raiders led 15-0.

The Dark Knights brought in Cody Mulholland as quarterback, and after one incomplete pass, he connected to Major for a ten yard gain. Mulholland's next pass intended for Garret Birchfield was batted away by a Raider and ADK had to punt.

The Raiders scored again on the next possession from the 11 yard line, increasing their lead to 22-0. Two quarterback sacks in the next Ada possession led to another turnover to the Raiders with only two seconds left in the half. The Raiders were on the 25 yard line, and Justin Gibson kicked a field goal to leave the score 25-0 at the half.

The Dark Knights came out of the locker room ready to score, and when the Raiders dropped their punt return, Demetri Dennard picked it up and ran to the end zone for the first Ada score. The ADK tried for a two-point conversion, but an incomplete pass from Hellman to Adam Kraning left the score 25-6.

The Ada defense prevented the Raiders from scoring on the next possession, and then ADK quarterback Hellman couldn't connect with anyone. The last possession of the third quarter showed the Ada defense holding off a Raider score while the clock ran down.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, a faulty time clock didn't stop the officials from keeping the game going. On a Raider fourth down, a pass was intercepted by a Dark Knight that eventually led to another Ada score. After ten plays, quarterback Mulholland connected with Major for the touchdown, and a successful two-point conversion put the score at 25-14.

The Raiders scored on their next possession with 5:47 to go in the game, leading 32-14. The next sequence saw ADK's Mulholland running to keep the ball in play, and then a pass interception by the Raiders led to a 30 yard gain. After three plays with no gain, the Raider quarterback ran in the ball to score. With the extra point, the Raiders led 39-14.

The last possession of the game belonged to the Dark Knights, who only had 1:40 left to play. Birchfield carried the ball twice for small gains, but then another pass interception sealed the fate of the Dark Knights as the clock ran out.

The Ada Dark Knights will scrimmage next weekend in Maumee and then take a week off before returning to Ada for their first home game on Saturday, June 6. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m., with the ADK hosting league foe Michigan Demons.
