ATLANTA, GA - The 2011 "Road to Atlanta; Gridiron Bowl II" Playoffs began over the weekend. Weather related concerns from Hurricane Irene causing three Xtreme Conference match ups to be postponed and an wild event in South Georgia leading to a game to be replayed, in essence taking away the bye week before the championship game in Atlanta for the Xtreme Conference.
In the wake of everything there were three games played in the Xtreme Conference to kick off the playoffs. The Henry County Horseman used a 52-yard punt return from Devin Chapman to propel them a 17-13 hard fought win over the Jefferson County Warriors. In a back and forth tilt the Warriors were trailing 10-6 when they returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter giving them their second lead of the game at 13-10. After Chapman's punt return TD, Jefferson County had three more possessions in the fourth quarter where they moved the ball but the drives ended in a punt, interception and a turnover on downs.
The Henry County Horsemen move to 11-0 on the season and advance to the second round however they'll have to wait another week before learning who their opponent will be. The South Georgia Noles and Georgia Jets were giving us what we expected to see, to top teams battling tooth and nail to advance. Smiley Jones opened the scoring on a draw for a Jets touchdown with a successful extra point making it 7-0 in the first quarter. The Noles answered when Marcus Brooks found Marcus Nelson for a 75-yard touchdown pass and the extra point was good evening the score at 7 apiece. The teams then played the second quarter, halftime and the entire third quarter. At the beginning of the fourth quarter it was ruled that the correct score was 7-6 in the favor of the So. Georgia Noles, who was just as much in awe as the Georgia Jets. Needless to say there was no resolution to the disagreement, despite video tape proving the Jets extra point was good and was ruled good by the two officials under the goalpost. The game was called by the officials and they left the facility. The GDFL ruled that the game must be won on the field therefore it will be replayed in in entirety next weekend.
In other Xtreme Conference action... Travis Poitier returned a punt 75-yards for a touchdown to get the Carolina Warriors on the board with a 7-0 lead. After another Warriors touchdown the Havoc stuck on a long touchdown pass with a successful two-point conversion making it 13-8 Warriors. Travis Poitier again flexed his muscles scoring on touchdown runs of 30 and 26 yards to break it open for the Warriors at 27-8. Joe Nate Taylor capped the scoring with a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown for the final margin, a Warriors 33-8 win. The defending champion Warriors with face the Beaufort Hornets in the second round after the Hornets defeated the Capital City Kings 14-7.
No we move over the Impact Conference where seven of eight games were played. The Oklahoma Thunder continued right where they left off in the regular season by smashing another opponent in the North Texas Marauders 70-0. Oklahoma will play the Dallas Diesel who defeated the Louisiana Bayou Vipers 35-16. The Indianapolis Tornados defeated the Clarksville Wolfpack 14-0 in a defensive struggle. Sunungura Rusununguko (just call him "Go Go") put the final touches on the win by recovering a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Tornados will face the Tennessee Hurricanes in the second round. The Hurricanes defeated the Clarksville Eagles 28-2. The Hurricanes broke open a close game in the third quarter after it was 8-2 at halftime.
On the top side of the bracket in the Impact the Kentucky Wolverines defeated the Tri-State Sharks 14-0. The Wolverines, winners of the Impact Conference last season, will face the Columbus Gladiators who defeated the Naptown Scorpions 15-14. The Gladiators came from behind to get the win. Naptown broke the ice with a 12-yard touchdown run by Cornelius Edwards giving the Scorpions a 6-0 lead that would stand deep into the fourth quarter. Then with less than 5 minutes remaining and the Gladiators staring a first round exit square int he eyes, Emmanuel Webb took over. Webb scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with a successful extra point give the Glads a 7-6 lead with under 4 minutes to play. Naptown came right back with it's own touchdown pass t pull back in fornt 14-7. Playoff intensity was in the are and the Glads used it to when Kenny Martion found Maurice Jones for a 32-yard touchdown pass with a successful two-point conversion for the win and final margin of 15-14.
In the final two match ups the Derby City Thunder won 20-0 over the Music City Stars and they will meet the Shanango Valley Storm who upended the Buckeye Bearcats 14-12 avenging their 45-0 regular season loss and ending the Bearcats Cinderella ride with the first round exit.
An interesting weekend no matter how you look at it and with five first rounds games moving to next weekend, there is still more to come.
