ATLANTA, GA - The GDFL playoffs continued over the weekend with some intense action that left those that didn't win "going to shoot marbles".
All five games in the Xtreme conference were first round playoffs games and four of them were affected by Hurricane Irene last week and had to be pushed back while the South Georgia Seminoles and Georgia Jets had to replay their first round game after the events that occurred that prevented it from being finished.
That's where we'll start in Dawson, GA. The South Georgia Noles overcame a 13-point first half hole to defeat the Jets 40-20. The Jets jumped out early with Smiley Jones taking a screen pass 55 yards for a touchdown, Nick Miller catching a 17-yard touchdown pass and linebacker Bernard Davis returning a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown. The 40 points scored by the Noles were the most allowed by the Jets in a game all season, the Jets had only allowed 42 points all season entering the contest. The Noles opened the second half with a 6-play 61-yard drive capping it with an 11-yard touchdwon pass from Marcus Brooks to Rashard Hunt that tied the game at 20 and swung all the momentum in the Noles favor. From that point forward it was all South Georgia Noles as they added 20 points in the fourth quarter against a tired Jets team for the final margin in their 40-20 win. The Noles will now travel to the Henry County Horsemen for a second round showdown of undefeated teams.
The Fayetteville Horizon defeated the Carolina Bulldogs 31-5 in a Sunday Night playoff game. The Horizon will face the Asheville Grizzlies who defeated the Camp Lejune Bulldogs 30-0 to advance in the playoffs.
Finally in the Xtreme Conference the Chambersburg Cardinals dismissed the Virginia Cougars 48-20 to advance to the second round. The Cardinals led 27-0 at the half and at one point in the third quarter were up 40-7. Chambersburg will face the Hampton Road Hurricanes.
Hampton Roads defeated the South Jersey Lynx 10-0 to earn their spot in the second round.

In the only second round playoff game in the Xtreme Conference the Carolina Warriors advanced by beating the Beaufort Hornets 31-12. Carolina will await the winner of the Henry County Horsemen/South Georgia Noles game in the third round of the playoffs

Chambersburg breezes to playoff win over Virginia Cougars

The Chambersburg Cardinals' season continues.
While playing host to the Virginia Cougars on Saturday night at Trojan Stadium, the Cardinals put up another dominating performance, winning 48-20, and will continue their undefeated season into the next round of the playoffs.
"Everybody knew that the pressure was on tonight," Chambersburg coach Chad Fauson said. "The guys realized that this game meant something. We knew we needed to jump on them early and fast and that's what we planned to do in practice this week. It was nice to see something that we had drawn up go according to plan."
The Cardinals' plan went into action during their first possession. Just over one minute into the game, Keon Lattimore found a hole and broke outside for a 62-yard run that left Virginia defenders trailing in his path.
"The week leading up to the game we heard that (Virginia) was talking trash, so we had it out for them," Lattimore said. "As soon as I got the ball I was thinking touchdown. I got good blocking up front and I think that play helped set the tone for the rest of the night."
Chambersburg got on the board again when Ronald Frazier scooped up a loose ball and ran it 75 yards for a score.
The Cardinals' scoring effort continued into the second quarter. Stephen Link nailed field goals from 29 and 25 yards, and Ottis Lewis used his height to extend above a defender in the end zone to grab 15-yard pass from Anthony Gardner to give Chambersburg a 27-0 lead at halftime.
Virginia came out fighting in the third period when Zach Terrell connected with Richard Carter, who broke free for a 76-yard score. However, Gardner answered with a 10-yard toss to Ronald Dawkins, who was standing open in the end zone, and Craig Heyward Jr. added to the lead with a seven-yard run.
A Cougars' interception return added seven more points before the start of the fourth quarter, and another touchdown was later scored by Virginia on a QB keeper from one yard out.
Chambersburg had the final word, however. Atcheson Conway found a gap and ran 36 yards to close the scoring efforts for the victorious Cardinals.
"I'm proud of these guys and am pretty happy with how we played in all phases of the game," Lattimore said. "I have to take my hat off to the defense and give credit to the coaching staff for their calls tonight. The fans were great, too. It was a good crowd. We're going to watch film this week and hopefully take what we learned tonight and add onto it."
Fauson agreed.
"This was our most complete game of the season," he said. "We need to keep improving each round as long as we get a chance to keep playing in the playoffs. This is the first game we really got into a rhythm.
"The beautiful thing is that we have the personnel to run two types of offense. We can run a power football game or run a finesse game and air it out and spread the field. And our defense is just solid. I wouldn't want to play against them."
It's unlikely that any opponents will want to, either.

Pollard Sets Sack Record Despite Lynx Playoff Exit

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – Football is the ultimate team game and in order to win games, the team must perform well. Consequently, despite how the well or bad a team performs, some outstanding individual achievements deserve plenty of accolades. Third year veteran DE James Pollard Jr.’s 9 sack performance deserves plenty of praise. Despite the superior play of Pollard, the South Jersey Lynx (6-4) could not overcome the 10-point deficit at the hands of the Hampton Roads Hurricanes (10-1).
The Lynx won the battle within by dominating the ‘Canes throughout the game. Offensively, South Jersey was plagued all year struggling to put points on the board and sooner or later, that would be the ending fate of the season. The defense played very well and was one or two big plays away from keeping the ‘Canes off of the board themselves.
The 'Canes have avenged a playoff loss from back in 2009 when the Lynx defeated them at home by scoring a late touchdown to give them a 14-7 win. Their satisfaction will be exaggerated with this 10-0 win because of their self proclaimed, "We da best" attitude but this is actually the first time the 'Canes have defeated the Lynx in four attempts. Last year in the season opener, the Lynx played to a 0-0 tie with the Hurricanes, the only other game the Lynx didn't defeat Hampton Roads.
Officiating is a major part of the game and playing on the road does not help either but some questionable no calls during those big plays changes the outcome considerably. All in all, it’s a part of the game so the players can’t hold their heads down because of it.
Pollard gave the ‘Canes fits because they could not stop him from coming off the edge no matter how many blockers was assigned to him. His 9 sacks not only shattered his own top 3 sack performances in a game, he also topped the charts with 26 sacks in a season surpassing his own season high of 17.5. Remarkably, Pollard has amassed 59.5 career sacks in just 3 years with the Lynx and is well on his way to owning an unbreakable all-time record in the Lynx record book.
The Lynx have made the playoffs in all 9 seasons but the last two consecutive years, they have been ousted from the playoffs in the first round. Head Coach Lester Cream Jr. is well aware of the setbacks of the past few years and wants to recruit heavily to get the Lynx back to performing like they have in the past.
