GREENCASTLE -- Sometimes a bit of pure, dumb luck is all a team needs.
After the Chambersburg Cardinals ambled through a quarter and a half of uninspired, sloppy play, luck is exactly what they received.
Linebacker Jaron Nalewak watched a fumbled ball bounce into his hands and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to spark the Cardinals to a 34-0 win over the Asheville (N.C.) Grizzlies in the third round of the Gridiron Developmental Football League playoffs.
Chambersburg (12-0) will host the Henry County (Ga.) Horsemen (13-0) on Saturday at 7 at Trojan Field in the Xtreme Conference final, with the winner advancing to the GDFL Championship.
Nalewak's recovery came with just under 90 seconds remaining in the first half and the Cardinals clinging to a 5-0 lead. Asheville quarterback Michael Byrd made a quick check-down pass to the far sideline and the Grizzlies receiver fumbled the ball on a hit by Louis Corum, picked it up and knocked it into Nalewak's hands.
"At that point, our offense wasn't clicking just right and we needed something to turn the game around," Nalewak said. "The first 20 yards I ran, I looked behind me and it was all Cardinals."
Chambersburg's offense was stagnant early. It produced only 26 yards on the ground in the first half, while quarterback Anthony Gardner completed six of 11 passes for 83 yards and threw one interception.
"Once again, our defense came through for us," Cardinals
coach Chad Fauson said. "Not that our offense didn't make the plays with what we were given, but the defense made the big plays to keep us in the game."
The Cardinals were spared their first deficit of the playoffs one play before Nalewak's return. Byrd found a wide-open Tyree Allen in the end zone for a touchdown that would have given the Grizzlies a 6-5 advantage. But the play was negated when Allen was ruled offsides on the snap.
Chambersburg's offense found its rhythm on the first series of the second half, completing a 71-yard drive with Gardner's 14-yard touchdown pass to Jerell Jones in the corner of the end zone. On the next Cardinals' possession, the home team needed only two plays. Keon Lattimore opened with a 55-yard run through the middle of the field and followed with a 6-yard rushing score.
For the second consecutive week, Chambersburg benefited from safeties. The first came on a ball snapped out of the end zone on a Grizzlies' punt attempt in the second quarter. In the third, Jonathan Nalewak blocked a punt through the back of the end zone.
A 1-yard touchdown pass from Gardner to Garrien Johnson on the first play of the fourth quarter closed the scoring.
"Tonight shows that we can rise above adversity," Jaron Nalewak said. "All year we haven't really had that problem. I think we needed to know that we could rise above and that's what this was."
