Update on JeanCat's Mom

Mom went in to hospital with repeated mini strokes and slurred speech on Tuesday night at 10:30pm.

It has been decided that she has had TIA's. Assessment going on with various tests today will lead to a better understanding of her situation tomorrow.

Will keep you all posted.

Re: Update on JeanCat's Mom

Sorry to hear that, will be in thoughts and prayers.

Re: Update on JeanCat's Mom

Dear Akus,
Thank you for your prayers!

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or little strokes that come and go.

Here is a site to help anyone understand: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4781

I am posting this for EDUCATIONAL purposes only:

"What is a TIA or transient ischemic attack?

A TIA is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage. Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce your risk of a major stroke.

Most strokes aren't preceded by TIAs. However, of the people who've had one or more TIAs, more than a third will later have a stroke. In fact, a person who's had one or more TIAs is more likely to have a stroke than someone of the same age and sex who hasn't.

TIAs are important in predicting if a stroke will occur rather than when one will happen. They can occur days, weeks or even months before a major stroke. In about half the cases, the stroke occurs within one year of the TIA.

What causes a transient ischemic attack?

TIAs occur when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery, and part of the brain doesn't get the blood it needs. The symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Most TIAs last less than five minutes. The average is about a minute. Unlike stroke, when a TIA is over, there's no injury to the brain.

What are the symptoms of a TIA?

It's very important to recognize the warning signs of a TIA or stroke. The usual TIA symptoms are the same as those of stroke, only temporary:

* Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
* Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
* Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
* Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
* Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

The short duration of these symptoms and lack of permanent brain injury is the main difference between TIA and stroke.

TIAs are extremely important predictors of stroke. Don't ignore them! If symptoms appear, CALL 9-1-1 TO GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY. A doctor should determine if a TIA or stroke has occurred, or if it's another medical problem with similar symptoms. Some examples are seizure, fainting, migraine headache, or general medical or cardiac condition. Prompt medical or surgical attention to these symptoms could prevent a fatal or disabling stroke from occurring.

For stroke information, call the American Stroke Association at 1-888-4-STROKE."

My mom had been speaking inaudible sounds and also in gibberish and we could not understand her. Worse yet she did not realize that she was not being understood. She did not understand WHY we took her to the ER. In her EARS and in her mind she was making perfect sense.
She thought we were nuts!

Any way she will be put on a blood thinner called Plavix, which as a pharmacology instructor and experienced healthcare worker I do not know why she has not been prescribed this before. i believe because she has a GI or stomach problems with aspirin and this is worse on the stomach. She is on Prevacid for the natural high amounts of acid in the stomach, but this may not do the trick for this drug. Any way She is supposed to come home. We have been told that given her history of April 2 heart attack, May 12/13 Angina attack and now TIA's she is a GREAT candidate for a much larger STROKE or Heart Attack and it may take her or leave her very disabled.

Re: Re: Update on JeanCat's Mom

Dear Patty.
They put her on Plavix which will prevent the plateletts in the blood from sticking and therefore clotting. But then it has other adverse reactions that we just hope will not affect her. GI problems for one.

Thank you so much!

Re: Update on JeanCat's Mom

Thank you Susie W.

Jill and I have much to be grateful for that we still have our moms to speak to. It gets harder knowing the end is nearer. But I do have the attitude that Jill takes too! What happens happens for the best and for a reason.

Thank you everyone for your kindness.'
