My MD appt. today

Well, I'm back from the Dr. and I have been put on Synthroid for my thyroid--start it tomorrow. And ...I'm insulin resistant and have been put on something that begins with an "M" - Meta something...can't remember. I'm trying to wrap my head around everything...but basically...I have to watch everything I eat...like I already do anyway....but have to basically go low carb.

I'm depressed b/c I wasn't expecting to be put on diabetic meds. I knew I was going to start thyroid, but the other..well..I'm not coping well with that.

Re: My MD appt. today

Carrie- don't panic. I'm on Synthroid and Metformin also. The WW diet is perfect for insulin resistance. Any weight loss is good also. You should soon feel better from the meds. You may have some time getting the Synthroid dose adjusted but it's not a big deal. I know that the diagnosis is daunting but insulin resistance can be controled. Keep posting and you'll get through this.

Re: My MD appt. today

Thx Patty. Like I said, I'm having trouble; I'm afraid to eat or something. I don't even fully understand what being insulin resistant "is." I asked my specialist "Does this mean I'm diabetic then?" and she said "no" but "prediabetic." She said I have to cut out a lot out carbs. So, I asked what is a recommeded amount of carbs. She stated that if I was to see a dietician they would recommend eating between 60-70 grams of carbs per meal, but she said I wouldn't lose any weight eating those amounts. She suggested, in her opinion, eating no more than 45 carbs per meal and 15 per snack. So, that got me looking at labels and the more I looked at the things I like to eat, the more depressed I got. Heck, there's 30g. of carbs in a fiber one bar. That's crazy...who can eat half a snack??? She wanted me to try really hard eating low carb and be compliant for the next several months while they try to pinpoint a correct dosage of the Metformin and Synthroid for me. While I don't consume near the amount of carbs I used to since joining WW - telling me I can't have the things that I've come to enjoy on WW is like...a death sentence. I'm being dramatic; but still!!!

Re: My MD appt. today

If you aren't diabetic why are they putting you on Metformin? I am diabetic and take that. I would think just taking the meds and eating healthy like you are now that you would be ok. It's not as bad as you think, at first when you get diagnosed something like that you feel like you can't eat anything. I went to a free diabetic class at our local hospital and that helped me. My mom who is also diabetic went to talk to a dietician and that helped her too. Give the Metformin a chance to work and see what it does to your sugar readings.

Re: My MD appt. today

Laura - good question! I guess it helps with people who are insulin resistant from what I'm reading online right now. I'm on a pretty low dose. Also, I have many of the symptoms of insulin resistant - however, the blood work doesn't show the levels as abnormal. See why I'm struggling with this? She said she just doesn't believe the bloodwork. Maybe I'm just one of those people where things don't always show up black and white. She's my "second" opinion and people come from "all" over b/c she's supposed to be the best Endocrinologist around. I will say that after eating "carbs" I get a crashing headache within 45 min. and the headaches come and go all day long. So, maybe I do need to adhere to a lower carb diet for awhile and see if I don't feel better. This monring, instead of my whole oatmeal raisin breakfast cookie, I ate half and made some egg beaters with veggies. I will say, it's almost noon and I've not suffered one of these headaches so far today.

Re: My MD appt. today

I guess she must know what she's talking about if she's one of the best, and if you're feeling better. That's what matters, that you feel better. I have a friend who suffered from horrible headaches every time she ate chocolate, that would be terrible for me. Do what she says and see what happens. My doctor says anything above 110 fasting blood sugar is borderline. Mine was over 200 several years ago when I was diagnosed diabetic. I started feeling so much better once I took the meds. Good luck to you, and you're doing the right thing by getting all the info you can about your diagnosis.

Re: My MD appt. today

I'm on levoxyl i have an inactive thryroid.

been on the same dose for about 10 yrs now.. at first it was a blood test every two weeks until the meds got adjusted..

i felt 100% better the first week on the med.

Ihave a friend that just started the diabete med, all due to her weight.. she's already taken off 30 lbs but still has about 70 more to go, andI'm sure at that
time she won't need medication anymore..

its amazing how the body breaks apart from poor
food choices and extra poundage...

you'll be fine, stick to program...

Re: My MD appt. today

Carrie-
Perhaps you would do better following the Core plan. I switch back and forth between Flex and Core and find once I strictly follow Core for about 1-2 weeks I no longer am looking for all the carby stuff I eat when I follow Flex. If you eliminate the carbs, your body (at least mine) seems to stop craving them. If you eat 1/2 a fiber 1 bar you are just setting yourself up to eat more of that type of food.

On Core you eat more protein - very little or no carbs - which keeps you very full. You can eat fruit for snacks and also things like sf/ff pudding and yogurt. I like to put the WW yogurt in the freezer for a bit to get it almost frozen (one of Tobe's great ideas!) When you have a lower carb meal you can "splurge" on a higher carb snack like a Fib. 1 bar.

There are substitutes for the things you have become used to eating on WW that keep you OP.

I am not diabetic, but my husband just got diagnosed. I try not to keep things in the house that I can eat on WW, but he might not be able to eat. Apparently, if you lose 10-15% of your weight you can change your need for medication. Hang in there. It is good that the doctor is being cautious with you, so you don't get any symptoms from being diabetic.

A good web site (with recipes) is the American Diabetes Association.

Good luck.

Re: My MD appt. today

I too have been diagnoise borderline diabetic- is there anything you need to do differently with WW when counting points. I am on flex as I dont feel like I have portion control for the Core plan.
