AND, IT COULD BE YOU THAT NEEDS HELP NEXT TIME. AFTER ALL...(REALLY?).. ARE WE NOT ALL "CHILDREN" - AT VARIOUS POINTS ON THE LEARNING CURVE OF TECHNOLOGY" ???  (I know I've still got a lot to learn and I've been at it for... well since 1970!)

Hopefully the information presented here will help provide solutions to some of today's automation challenges. Some issues are probably old, some are probably new. Many are products of the economy, the resultant reduction in manpower, exacerbated by aging equipment crippled by decreases in maintenance budgets.  The ULTIMATE goal here is that we all become more successful in our careers and chosen professions.

I do have the programming console and have been playing around with the unit a little. The unit came with a schematic and program which has helped me understand most of the system. There's just a few questions left, if you could answer these i will not be needing a manual.

There seem to be 8 seperate inputs, numbered 20 through 27, are these in
special in some way?

I assume the SFR function to be a shift register function. I found out it needs 3 inputs. Could you clarify how this function is used?

What do the console buttons "mon", "src" and "step set" do?

The buttons 8 and 9 have an extra text "set" and "res" which i assume are set and reset, how would these be used?

I would be very gratefull if you could answer these questions?

I'd like to add that i would be happy to sell this unit to anyone that's in
need of it.

Danny,
The manual would still be your best bet for understanding this PLC. If you do wish to use the PLC as a learning tool, the manual would be a good investment.

I'll try to briefly answer your questions.
1) The inputs are in groups of 8 (because the processor is an 8-bit processor). They are 0~7, 10~17, and in the case of your 40 I/O machine, 20~27. There is nothing special about these inputs - they are the same as the first two groups.

2) The SFR is for the Shift Register and there are two available in your D-40: SFR00 (SFR00~SFR07), and SFR10 (SFR10~SFR17). The first (or top) input is the "Data" input, the second is the "Clock", and the third (or bottom) is for "Reset". The manuals show this in Ladder Diagram format, and also shows how you would key this in using the programming console.

3) MON | SRC | STEP SET
MON = MONITOR Key - Monitors coils or contacts during operation
SRC = SEARCH Key - Searches for a specific contact, coil, or special command.
STEP SET = Reads the specified step

4) SET/RESET
SET = Specifies a Forced Output
RESET = Specifies to Reset a Forced Output

One other thing you should know - so that you can avoid losing your program...
If you press CLR + ENT + DEL, you will clear the program (everything between step 000 and step 999), as well as timer/counter data. It will also reset the shift registers. Be certain when you do this, as there is no second chance.
