Re: EMII Product Brochure

Dear Menno Jelierse,

The EMII brochure is part number SI-E092Q. It can be downloaded from our website (click here).

The Operations Manual for the EMII, is part number NJI-054(X). It is not available electronically. Your local distributor should have a copy of both of these.

You asked for more information on the EMII. Here goes. The predecessor for the EMII was the EM, for which production began in 1987. Its "product life cycle" was extended with the advent of the CPM-E3 processor. At this point, the EM series became the EMII. Only the most exceptional PLCs (regardless of brand) have ever retained their popularity after a decade. The EMII seems to be one of these.

The reason, I believe is based on 3 factors. First, as is with all Hitachi PLCs, the MTBF (Mean-Time-Between-Failure) rate put this PLC at the top of its class. Hitachi (Japan) designs its PLCs for use in its own factories around the world - they are their own biggest customer (~$86B/Yr). Recognizing the dynamics and robustness of this platform, Reliance Electric (now Rockwell-Automation) brand labeled the E, EM, EMII and sold these as the Reliance Shark X, Shark XL, and Shark XLII. Because of their aggressive marketing and the product dynamics, these systems found their way in to an amazing variety of applications. From our experience, most of these are still in service. Even after the R-A acquisition, Reliance still uses the "Shark XLII" as remote I/O for their AutoMax DCS system. Furnas Electric likewise relabeled the EMII and sold it as the 96M until their acquisition by Siemens.

Secondly, just as the CPM-E3 processor gave new life to the series, Hitachi has introduced a hand-full of new processors. Likewise, these have set the stage for quite a few (?) years more presence in the market-place. You may have seen reference to the H200/250/252-Series. These "H-Series" processors - ( borrowed from the enormously successful Large-H ), utilize the same rack, power-supply, and digital I/O as the EMII. The program used in your CPM-E/CPM-E2/CPM-E3 processor can be translated into the H-Series protocol.

Thirdly, is an issue of timing. Most people agree that we have become a Global Community. As such, modern market decisions are based on the new mindset. As the EMII is so successful around the world, Hitachi (in my opinion) probably realizes that any plan to discontinue this product would be a disservice to its many world-wide customers (including its own manufacturing facilities mentioned above). Accordingly, they still periodically bring out new I/O for the EMII/H200 (case in point is PIM-DG/PIM-DGH/PIM-DGW).

You asked for more information on the EMII. I trust I have responded appropriately. Please contact our sales department if you have specific inquires on EMII stock.

Best Regards,

Timothy Davis :-H
