Hopefully the information presented here will help provide solutions to some of today's automation challenges. Some issues are probably old, some are probably new. Many are products of the economy, the resultant reduction in manpower, exacerbated by aging equipment crippled by decreases in maintenance budgets.  The ULTIMATE goal here is that we all become more successful in our careers and chosen professions.

      MAYBE THIS FORUM CAN HELP!!!

Re: EH-150 Programming Software

Dear Antonio Polisel Filho,

The Hitachi EH-150 can be programmed with LEW (from Hitachi Japan), PRO-H (Hitachi Europe GmbH), ActSip-H (Actron A.B.), or ActWin-CH1 (Actron A.B.). Regardless of how your EH-150 was programmed – one of the above mentioned programming software packages, or even one of the hand-held programmers, the stored program can still be read by any of the other means. For example, PLC “A” was programmed with the PGM-GPH Hand-Held Graphic Programmer in Belgium. You receive it in Brazil, and the only means you have is ActWin. The ActWin will “read” the program and display it in Ladder form. Alterations can be made and reloaded to the PLC. Example: PLC “B” was programmed with LEW (Ladder Editor for Windows) in Japan. Let’s supposed that it was sent to the U.S. and this plant has decided to use PRO-H. No problem.

The one thing to keep in mind, is that when the program is uploaded to the PLC – only the “machine instruction” code is actually transferred. If you have been using Programming Software and have added comments, and labels, none of that information is uploaded. This is quite common throughout the industry – and until recently, was the standard. There are some “upscale” (big $) units that now do save the text labels and comments. This (IMHO) is simply an attempt to complete with the Industrial PC market.

With this background out of the way, let me now address your questions. How do you get a back-up copy? If you purchased a software package, you should be able to make an archive copy without violating any copyright laws. If what you really mean, is “How do I get my hands on a copy”? Then the answer is simply that you must purchase it. “Is it necessary?” Again, in my humble opinion (IMHO), that all depends on how critical the PLC is to your operations. If, by being down for a day or a week, it will impact you financially, then the answer is emphatically, “YES”. Programming Software, or really even the hand-held programmers, are invaluable not just for uploading and downloading after a program “tweak”, but in diagnosing problems in the functionality of your equipment. What an easy way to determine if the problem is a bad limit switch, or a wire damaged somewhere in-between.

Good Luck with your project

Timothy Davis
