Hi, I served on 205/209 Squadron Short Sunderlands RAF Seletar from 4th February to 12th December 1958. This was my first posting in the RAF as an aircraft engine mechanic it also happened to be the last Flying Boat Squadron in the RAF.
This was a 'different' RAF, life was different the terminology was different, the morale was completely different, but when back ashore you became part of the RAF again not The Kipper Fleet as we were known.
I am in touch with 19 other bods from the halcyon days, spread the message and see if we can get others to join this forum, thanks in advance, John/Gary Cooper
Hello Mr Sanderson,Hope you don't mind me contacting.you might have known my dad,Brian Matthews, signaller with Richard Lockyer's crew in 1953-54.They flew v victor, nj177 quite a lot until she was lost in a typhoon in japan in 1954.I'm doing a bit of research into the markings and stencilling on the sunderland fuselage around the doors and exits.Do you know any ex ground crews or aircraft fineshers that were based in seletar in the 1950's?Did you have a dope shop on the station?
perhaps you would like to share photo's of the 209 sqn sunderlands.I have my dad's album on disc, about 30 photo's of sunderlands etc.
Anyway,drop me an e-mail .
Cheers john matthews.

Does anyone who served on FEFBW at the time of its disbandment know what happened to 205 Squadrons Cannon,I am the person who relieved 205 of it when a sunderland was beached at Jai tak in 1954, I have seen a photo of it when it was reinstated outside FBWHQ Seletar, but what happened to it when the Station closed.
Do you remember Cyril Jones, Duncan Stenhouse, Gordon Richardson (Instrument fitter) or Bruce Curtis (Armourer). They were on 209 Sqn at the same time as you. They are members of the RAF Seletar Association. We have organised tours to Singapore with a day trip to Seletar (the Association has a good relationship with camp commander); and you can stand on a spot that rekindles specific memories. The newsletters have plenty of info about the flying boats and their carers. If you join you won't regret it.

Someone else asked this question fairly recently about the cannon that went missing outside 205/209 offices. I recall that 205 boys from Changi lifted it one night but that it was retrieved some days after and thence the wheels set in concrete!
