Based at Watto from October 1967 to my discharge in July 1969. I worked on the line on 29 (F) Squadron as an Aircraft Engine Fitter.
Tacevals, QRA's and Operational Turnrounds were the order of the day here, busy place as the kites only stayed up for 50 minutes unless they were on a flight refuelling exercise.
Who remembers one of our kites nearly hitting the Gasometer near Hendon on a practice flyby for the Queens birthday rehearsals, or the pilot that landed at Horsham St Faith instead of Coltishall but of course the best was those that came in just a feww feet over the hangars from the east then sat the Frightening Lightning on her tail, selected reheat and off into the deep blue yonder, I still don't think there is anything around today that could touch this kite!
