Medieval tower found in Trondheim

TRONDHEIM, Norway, March 13 (UPI) --

The remains of what appears to be an early medieval watchtower have been found under two buildings in Trondheim, Norway's medieval capital.

Archaeologists believe that the tower dates from the time of King Sverre, Aftenposten reported. Sverre, who ruled Norway from 1184 to 1202, defeated a rival in the Battle of Kalvskinnet at Trondheim in 1179.

The tower was mentioned in a saga written about a massacre in 1206.

Archaeologist Ian Reed said that the tower, which may have been 60 feet high, was torn down in the 17th century, probably to get stone for new buildings in Trondheim or to repair its cathedral. He said that what was found was the remains of the ground floor, used as a vaulted cellar under more recent buildings, and portions of walls almost 5 feet thick.

Under Norwegian laws on historic sites, the tower must be preserved, but Sissel Skoglund of the Office of Historic Preservation said that tower ruins could be incorporated into the hotel planned for the site.
