the police say innocent, and I can't argue

Just wanted to put this out there, and I apologize for the length of this post in advance. I cover crime for a publication in the U.S., and due to the nature of my job (and the international nature of kiddie porn) I know something of how the system works.
Basically, it is a crime in many countries to access child pornography. That's because the police need a way to subpeona individual accounts. That legality is their "in", so to speak. What happened in this instance (and many others) was that Pete's name came up on a police scan of subscribers to a certain service. So, the cops went to his house, and, as they do for everyone they investigate, they confiscated his computer and, back at the station, scanned all his files to "bookmark" any child porno addresses. According to the news accounts, police found no child pornography downloaded into the computer. (For the folks that may not know this, one can browse porno sites, or any kind of site, without actually duplicating the info into your own computer.)
That is essentially the level of proof police seek. If you have downloaded images of children, you are charged with possession. If not, you are not charged. It is truly that black and white. Townsend was arrested on suspicion of possession of child porn, and was aquitted because there were no images in his machine. In the eyes of the law, he is not guilty.
So, one could say, well, he paid to access a pornographic site. Alas, I don't know of a pornographic site that does not require payment. Sorry to say, there are hundreds of thousands, and probably millions of people who visit kid porn sites, some for sexual gratification, some out of curiosity. Most don't go more than once, as the pictures are truly unsettling (A disclaimer: I've only seen these photos when they were presented as evidence in a court case, not by going online.) I promise you, you know someone who has done it. It is, unfortunately, that common.
What is truly unfair is that, 99.99 percent of the time, this type of preliminary investigation doesn't leak out to the media. But because Pete is a quote, unquote celebrity, he had to face the music. In the eyes of the law, he is not guilty. We should respect that decision and pass no more judgement.

From day one of a name leaking to the press, Pete has co-operated with the police and the tabloids, up to the point of accepting the caution. Pete has admitted his naivety, the fact that he acted irresponsibly, the fact that he has shocked and upset many many people and has publicly apologised. But he is still persecuted publicly for something that has been dealt with.

Its isnt just the tabloids that still twist the knife and seek to remind the public of what he was cautioned for... but magazines, long respected by the rock world and culture STILL to this day print the fact for all to see. Why do we need reminding? What is the point you are trying to get across? A tabloid or a website or a magazine catches wind of the fact that Pete auctions a guitar for charity, and an extremely good cause. The first thing that is printed is a statement to remind us of the alleged situation that Pete was faced with three years ago. Its all a load of BOLLOX and always has been.

...so...this person gets out their credit card & signs up with a child porn site. being an adult webmaster in the late 90`s, i can tell you THAT is the site`s customer. the person who has chosen to view the type of material the adult (or illegal, deviant, harmful child abuse images) site has in its` members area is there by effort & choice.
...so...this famous dude has news reports released all over the world that his credit card number (& proof of having joined this web site to be able to get access to the explicit members only area with child porn) now comes forward to explain to the publiuc he`s been on a research / dirty pictures removal from the internet campaign for years & this was all a part of that.
...try this ...clear your mind & imagine someone caught doing this. now list what the guilty person would be likely to say to explain their actions. the crusade to help us all story will probably be on the list.
...as i mentioned, i love & admire mr. Townshend & the amazingly great band he`s in. he has some problems here. Michael Jackson is a pedophile who preys on poverty stricken cancer patients. he should be in prison. the days of famous people getting away with the most serious of crimes because of their celebrity or wealth has GOT to stop! as mr. Townshend himself would probably point out most famous people are that way because they are simply narcissistic nitwits not because of some devine nature that would excuse them from serious crimes. this, i think, makes mr. Townshend sticking with the crusader story that much worse. he is in fact not a narcissistic nitwit celebrity. and he can do better than this.

I have a lot to say on this issue, but, like Pete, I'm deciding not to engage anyone in a debate and merely state that I know in my soul that Pete is innocent and quite honestly a decent person. It's unfortunate those who think that Pete is a bad person because of this. Pete is many things: moody, arrogant and more than a bit crazy. But he is not a bad person.

It still hurts me when people talk about Pete as though he were guilty, but I've learned to dull the pain with the knowledge that Pete is innocent. He knows he's innocent, so do his family, friends and true fans. That's all that matters. Until we can clear his name fully and let the music and his charitable actions speak for themselves, we'll just have to do as much as we can for Pete.

If there's anything else I can do to help, please anyone let me know. I'm always looking for new ways to spread the facts of Pete's innocence.
