I far as I am concerned contests ruined surfing on the north shore. I started surfing north shore in 1965 before contests and on a crowded day there would be 10-15 people at each spot. Now every time pipeline breaks there is a contest and it\'s all about money for a few. Surfing is not a competitive sport, it\'s an individual sport. I see lots of unknown surfers in Hawaii who are just as good or better than the so-called pros. I used to judge surf contests in Hawaii, including the 1st Pipe Masters, but I stopped because of threats in the water from people who thought they should have won but didn\'t because the judges cheated them. Look at what it has done to property values too, in the 1960\'s you could rent a beach house on the north shore for $200. It\'s just too crowded because of contests and publicity, not fun anymore. Surfers who rejected contest were called \'Soul Surfers\' now I read surfers calling themselves soul surfers while they talk about the contests they are entering. There is no going back, too late. Glad I had the opportunity to experience the north shore before all this contest B S. Used to be when you went surfing you looked at the size, direction, and conditions now the first thing is \'how many in the water?\' Nobody surfed Himalayas, Avalanche or Jockos (Holdens), now even these places are crowded. Even the fresh water pond at Chuns is gone, if you remember that you know the north shore from the old days.

People need to realize that surf contests alone are not the sole cause of the issues our community is facing. It is the popularity, and the fame of the
North Shore that has put us in this situation. Over the years we have allowed these contests, movies, and promoters to spread our way of life throughout the world. What did we think would happen? We have been voluntarily letting people exploit our lifestyle and resources to the world in exchange for the economic success it brings to us, and now that its out of control beyond what is acceptable; we may no longer be capable of stoping its progression. Now that we have allowed ourselves to become reliant on the money this fame brings our community it would have severe consequences on us if we were to now try to stop and turn in the other direction. Loss of jobs and people having to move elsewhere to find work. Its our fault. We should have seen this comming a long time ago. But we didnt do anything about it. As for me I would be happy to loose my job just for the chance to live in the North Shore I remember growing up in a long time ago.

stop supporting the fame of the north shore and the popularity of the surfing way of life if you value it

I emailed Mayor Harris this morning after hearing about the protest and the permit denial. I wanted to email the Parks and Rec. director, Balfour, but couldn't find the address. I'm somewhat new to the islands and don't boardsurf but find the denial in poor judgement ... after almost twenty years, there should had been consideration for your contest. Any help on contacts to voice a protest, (unless there were deadlines passed), I'd be happy to write more emails in support. Good luck.
